Is there a proper clean toilet available? Are there any changing rooms around? *** We are lacking the basics. It’s essential for the Goa government to enforce stricter regulations on hoteliers and taxi services, improve beach management, and prioritize the safety of tourists to restore Goa’s appeal. God’s own campaign This World Tourism Day, the story of a campaign which broke the mould in destination marketing. In early 90s, when India was plagued with low tourism, the southern state of Kerala took it upon itself to bring some change. With the iconic ‘God’s own country’ campaign, not only did Kerala Tourism position itself as a global tourism destination but also changed the destination marketing landscape in India forever. This post however is about another campaign from Kerala Tourism. The one that broke the mould. In 2010, Kerala Tourism was looking to aggressively market itself to international tourists esp. European travelers. A 10-year research data of European travelers to Kerala revealed a powerful insight – “Something happens to these travelers when they are in Kerala-something that alters their mindspace” Armed with this insight, Kerala Tourism created its new campaign which attempted to bring forth the moments that bring to life, the life altering experience of an international traveler to Kerala. The campaign was aptly called ‘Your moment is waiting’. A campaign targeted at ‘global audience of experience seekers. One that went beyond traditional slide-show of picturesque places. Created by Stark communications, the campaign not only won hearts but few awards too. The campaign went on to win the Golden city gate awards, dubbed as the Oscar of the travel industry.
