LEADERS: Don’t be afraid to give clear directives. Own your leadership. Co-design is great in certain circumstances but it is not always necessary or practical. Also, it can do great harm to the culture of your organization and to buy-in to invite your team into co-design when the direction has already been decided by senior leadership. In those moments co-design can begin to feel like manipulation as people are ushered toward a particular goal after being told to dream big and broadly. It is also critical to give clear parameters when co-designing with your team. Be clear about constraints. Be clear about things that are off the table. Finally, it is critical to include senior leadership in co-design spaces. Nothing is worse than your staff being excited about their ideas only for leadership to see what the team decided and later shoot it all down. This can be avoided by having senior leaders at the table. Doing so will allow you to remind folks of limitations, constraints and non-negotiables during the design process.
