For my senior capstone class: I was asked to create a research project on a topic of my choice, as long as I correlated it with a theory of Communications Studies. With my focus being in Strategic Communication, I chose to examine Organizational Culture Theory (OCT), and how it is capable of being a strategic tool for financial and social success within insurance firms. I knew I would find this project interesting and impactful for my self-growth in the beginning of my career at Marsh McLennan Agency. Attached is a snapshot of my research paper.

This is just a not-so-random thought about codes and standards. I'm attending the National Board summer meeting this week, and our team from Part 2 (Inspection) is looking at several retirements. A loss of experience, with some new members filling in, but maybe not enough to fill every empty seat or more. When I think about the other professional groups I work with (ASME and API), I can visualize the same thing happening. Such is life - or so most of us think. Retirements or losses are inevitable, but building back is the hard thing. What I don't see is a heavy influx of younger, technically-minded persons that will be sitting in those seats next. Our committees, subcommittees, subgroups, task groups, work groups, etc. - whatever they may be - are getting smaller. The truth is we have a lot of intelligent individuals out there who can help make a difference in the next edition of any code, standard, or recommended industry practice. And contrary to the belief of some, we have not solved all the issues. The future of these documents needs members: "new blood" and diverse experience and knowledge. This will help drive sustainability and improve our guiding documents. The problem is reaching those individuals for a commitment. It is a commitment of sharing, passion, and wanting to make our industries better in safety, reliability, and mechanical integrity that is required. I urge those of you who are involved in the activity of shepherding our guiding document to find a younger person (or more than one) and start mentoring them in what we do and why we do it. Let's make sure the next group, the next generation, and beyond can carry the torch and improve on what has been accomplished in the past. Even solve issues with new technology and new methodology we are just uncovering. And, if you are interested but have no immediate connection, please reach out to the industry-guiding organization you are interested in and find out how you can become involved (and find a mentor within that organization).

The simplest tool you can use to know if you have the right people in the right seats. GWC It focuses on three key aspects: understanding the job (Get it), having a passion for the job (Want it), and having the ability to do the job well (Capacity to do it). Put all your people through this filter and it will quickly answer a lot of the questions you keep asking yourself.... 💥💯

Just finished the course “Sallie Krawcheck on Risk-Taking” by Sallie Krawcheck! Check it out: https://lnkd.in/gqHYEhiF. One takeaway: we need a diverse team to not easily agree on something, to look at challenge thoroughly from different angles, different perspectives. #BusinessRisk #RiskManagement #BusinessStrategy.
