Enjoyed hearing Daniel Susskind on IMFPodcast, talking about economic growth, innovation, and ideas. His main assertion is that economic growth - with #innovation as its primary driver - stems from ideas. Therefore, policies that enable people to unleash their #creativity and facilitate ideation are key to driving development. We need to balance thinking and doing, yes, but let’s continue to harness and leverage the power of imagination and ideas as we move humanity forward. #EconomicGrowth #innovation https://lnkd.in/dzcr5VMT

Today's episode of Tech Talks features a conversation with Sir Vince Cable, former Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, and leader of the Liberal Democrats. What can you expect if you tune in? The slides feature a few quotes to give you a flavour, but I think there are three main areas of discussion 👇 Government's Role in Supporting Tech A key focus of Sir Vince's tenure was promoting and co-financing R&D in emerging industries like fintech and advanced manufacturing. However, he warns government against "picking winners" by heavily subsidising individual firms, arguing this approach has often backfired: "That's not what the government should be doing." Balancing Regulation and Innovation Sir Vince acknowledges the delicate balance to strike between regulating powerful tech giants and allowing innovation to flourish. On one hand, he points to China's heavy-handed crackdown on tech leaders, versus the other extreme where a hands-off approach in the US has allowed tech titans like Elon Musk to accumulate immense, unchecked power. Ultimately, Sir Vince believes the UK must find a "middle way" that prevents the abuse of monopoly power without stifling innovation. Positioning the UK for Tech Leadership Sir Vince argues the UK must shed its "delusions of grandeur" and believes the UK should focus on building robust regional tech clusters and improving access to growth capital for startups - areas where the country has historically underperformed. It's on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and all the usual places now! Thank-you to Rory Burton for helping set this interview up 🙏 Harvey Nash Nash Squared #Technology #Podcast #Leadership

I recently recorded a new episode of the Beyond Value Creation podcast with Noah Healy who has a remarkable personal story of a battle with the Patent office that has led to him developing some startlingly different thoughts on the future of the relationship between man and technology. Noah is an Algorithmist with a Conscience who takes a lot of inspiration from Alan Turing and sees a fundamental disconnect in the modern world between those of us that have grown up with a typical Aristotelian view of the world, based on human logic and a new generation of thinkers who apply computational logic. Whilst this could become a highly philosophical debate, Noah has a remarkable knack of using real life examples to illustrate how we need to change our perspective of the world to really be able to transform it with technology. Whilst technology is moving at a sometimes terrifyingly fast pace, we humans are simply not keeping up and that needs to change. Tune in to the next episode, live now, and find out why we need to look to the younger generations to better adapt ourselves for the future that is coming. https://lnkd.in/ew_NsCiQ

If you focus on the negative and the cost of things, you will never see just how wonderful it actually is. There are miracles happening every day, and people are making them happen, you simply have to be the person to see it. Focusing on just the cost in the negative side will prevent you from ever seeing the world of possibilities that are closer to you than you think. The teams at Skills Society and Social Innovation Canada, with a host of key helpers, are convening an important conversation in May about the future of social innovation labs. The first of several podcasts is available below. While labs are clearly only one, complementary and niche way to contribute to the scale and depth of change we need to make on stubborn societal challenges, they bring a lot to the table. So, what do they look like? What niche role do they play in change-making work? What kind of results are reasonable to expect? How do design and implement excellent initiatives? What type of funding, policy, cultural eco-system do we need to help them thrive? These are some of the questions explored in this series and the face to face event in May. Take a look!
