The Indian Alcobev Industry - A Quick Glance India is the third largest alcobev market in the world by volume, closely following the USA and China. While it is currently evaluated at 55 billion dollars this market is expected to grow to 64 billion dollars over the next five years. The Indian alcobev industry claims a lion's share of this market, offering direct and indirect employment to a staggering 79 lakh individuals in India (as per ISWAI). Indian alcobev brands are not just making their presence felt globally, they are winning awards at reputed international competitions, thus earning a strong association with high quality. Continuing its multifaceted growth, the industry is now producing a diverse range of alcoholic beverages and riding up the premiumisation curve, fueled by growing demand for premium liquor among Indian consumers. "In the past decade, the Indian beverage industry has shifted its focus from producing solely in India to creating drinks specifically tailored to the Indian market. Consumers have become more discerning and are now looking for brands with Indian heritage. Over the last two years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, the focus has shifted to "Made for India" and "Made in India for the world,'' said Mr Kunal Vasudeva, Co-founder & Managing Director, Indian School of Hospitality. 'The top single malt in the world, for the last 3-4 years has been an Indian single malt, and the best-infused gins are also made in India for the world. Friends, In the middle of my reading of a book “WHY BHARAT MATTERS” by our EAM S. Jaishankar, this #IWSR report appeared in my mailbox this evening. The subject of this #IWSR report is very interesting, insightful, and encouraging, and that is - “INDIA’S GROWTH POTENTIAL IN 2024 & BEYOND”. (I have recently concluded my reading of a book “INDIA’S MOMENT” by Mohan Kumar, a veteran diplomat). In this report IWSR has tried to analyse the drivers for the unexpected & phenomenal growth of India’s beverages alcohol market. This report has a very interesting data which says against a backdrop of a +1% volume for the total global beverage alcohol in 2022, spirits volumes in India increased by +12%, Beer increased by +38%, Wine up +19% and Ready to Drink (RTD) up +40%, not only this alone but in all product categories value grew ahead of volume. India is one of the few large beverage alcohol markets globally which is consistently growing, and this is expected to continue for the years to come. Here are some very encouraging findings and data mentioned in this #IWSR report – · Between 2021 and 2031, the country is expected to add 283m more middle-class consumers. · Unsurprisingly, ongoing premiumisation in India is being driven by these rising levels of affluence, an aspirational consumer base and an overwhelmingly positive outlook across almost all personal confidence metrics. “Premiumisation is now acquiring a distinctly Indian element”. · “Niche drinks are increasing their penetration of the Indian market, thanks to a willingness to experiment – supported by social acceptance, urbanisation, rising incomes and product innovations, not to mention growing participation by female LDA+ consumers”. · “Younger LDA consumers have a greater variety of entry points into beverage alcohol, and, as a result, repertoires are evolving.
