International Day for People with Disabilities (IDPWD) presents an opportunity for organisations to raise awareness for work place inclusion. Now, there is an opportunity to take all the rich insights shared from this year's IDPWD into a plan of action to improve work place inclusion for 2025 and beyond. What actions can you take?
Recently, we came together to celebrate ‘International Day of People with Disability’ (IDPWD), promoting awareness and understanding about the lived experiences of people with disability. A special thanks to our guest speaker Donna Purcell GAICD CF, disability advocate and Director on the Board of the Australian Disability Network, who shared insights about her own disability journey and workplace access and inclusion. Together, we explored common myths and stereotypes, discussed ways to get involved with our newly formed disability employee network, and how everyone can better support our colleagues with lived experiences of disability. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this event meaningful. #IDPWD #Diversity #Inclusion #DisabilityAwareness

In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (#NDEAM), we must acknowledge that some employers miss the full potential people with disabilities bring to the table. Too often, assumptions limit opportunities, overshadowing creativity and problem-solving skills. A true commitment to inclusion involves consulting with the disability community, learning from their collective knowledge, and recognizing the value they add to various roles. That’s why we are honored to work alongside the A11iance community for our core products, ensuring that lived experiences are central to our approach to digital accessibility. Together, we're building a more inclusive digital world and a world that works for all. Learn more about our work with the community and how we uncover more accessibility issues with expert human testing at https://lnkd.in/ebfv42v7. Alt text: “Employers could do a better job questioning their own assumptions about what disabled people can do, particularly our ability to bring creativity and problem-solving skills to the job. I would also like to see them making a greater effort to consult with the disability community(s) to learn what collective knowledge and skills disabled people have gained in general and in performing the jobs they want filling.” - Carley Mullin, A11iance Member #NDEAM #DisabilityEmployment #DigitalInclusion #TeamAudioEye

Thanks Donna Purcell GAICD CF for being part of our IDPWD 2024 celebrations! Some key takeaways from the event: 🌟many forms of disability are invisible and people’s experience of disability are as unique as their fingerprint so don’t make assumptions and be curious and ask questions respectfully 🌟ensure to bring lived experienced voices in the work you do 🌟leaders play an important role in creating a supportive, inclusive and accessible environment 🌟technological advancements have enabled greater accessibility and independence for people with disabilities, but technology doesn’t help if information is not put in accessible formats

A great way to celebrate Disability Pride Month and beyond is to hire people with disabilities. Right now, 85% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are unemployed. Many of them want to work and have skills to contribute. Among those who are employed, people with IDD are working fewer than 13 hours a week on average and less than one-fifth of them are getting workplace benefits. But research shows that disability inclusion is a proven good business decision. See these stories from employees and their employers. https://lnkd.in/e8yWhv-x #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityInclusion #HirePWD

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. In 2023, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities was 7.2%, which is nearly twice that of those without disabilities (3.5%). Workers with disabilities are also more likely to work part-time, be underpaid, and are often self-employed, highlighting the need for greater inclusion and justice for people with disabilities. This month, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of workers with disabilities and recommit to ensuring everyone has access to good jobs and pay. This year’s theme, "Access to Good Jobs for All," reminds us of the importance of inclusive employment practices and valuing workers with disabilities. At Disability Lead, we uplift the power of people with disabilities and their efforts to create better, equitable, and more inclusive communities. #DisabilityEmploymentAwarenessMonth #DEAM #NDEAM2024 #DisabilityJustice

July is Disability Pride Month and Specialisterne is gearing up! Disability Pride events are essential in fostering inclusivity and celebrating the diverse abilities of individuals within our community. Most of the time, we don’t typically see neurodivergent profiles celebrated as openly. Together, we have the opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion while also providing a platform for individuals with neurodivergence to share their stories, talents, and achievements. #Neurodiversity #NeurodiversityPride #DisabilityPride #InclusionForAll What are you proud of? According to the Harvard Business Review 90% of companies claim to prioritize diversity, yet only 4% consider disability in those initiatives (Disability as a Source of Competitive Advantage, July-August 2023). https://lnkd.in/gChcmeEN At Parents Helping Parents, we believe that good jobs change lives, and that all workers–including those with disabilities–deserve the same opportunities to obtain and succeed in jobs and career fields of their choice. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Join us in celebrating the efforts of individuals with disabilities who are already employed. Share the efforts your company is making to provide for an inclusive and diverse workplace. Look internally about what you can do to help provide more opportunities for talented people who live with a disability.
