Prioritize your wellbeing for a healthier work life 🌱 Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay, and this year's World Health Organization theme focuses on mental health at work. In the Netherlands, 1 in 5 employees struggle with burnout, and 19% report burnout symptoms. These facts are a reminder that caring for our mental health is super important—personally and for our work life. Although governments and employers have the main responsibility to protect and promote mental health at work, you can also take steps to support your wellbeing. Here are some techniques I use to manage stress and stay more focused, resilient, and balanced: 🏃♂️ Running: A morning run can boost your dopamine levels, reduce stress, and clear your mind. It can help you feel energized and ready for your working day! l love joining run clubs during the weekend...it is a great way to meet like-minded people and be part of a greater community. For expats in the NL 🇳🇱: It is also a good way to make Dutch friends and practice your Dutch language skills. 🧘♀️ Mindfulness: Taking a few minutes desk break for mindfulness can reduce stress and improve concentration. I recommend you meditate for a few minutes or to try the box breathing technique. 🧘 Yoga: It can help you reduce anxiety, manage your emotions, and promote mental flexibility...preparing you to better manage work-related challenges. ❄️ Ice Baths: While it can be a bit intense, ice baths are amazing to boost your mental clarity and build resilience. Now that autumn is here and the winter season is around the corner, you can also try a cold plunge in nature. In Amsterdam, my favorites are Hima Ice Baths, Renessence or Saints & Stars (if you want a more immersive experience with Sauna). Remember to take time for yourself today and every day 🧠 💜 In aid of World Mental Health Day, it's important for us to understand that achieving a healthy work-life balance and prioritising yourself every once in a while is essential. We're all guilty of taking work home. Sometimes its necessary, but when you start to prioritise work over your health, then it is time to take a step back and remember to look after your mind and body. Useful Steps Below: ✨𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞- At the end of the day, ensure you've established a plan for the following day, along with things that you want to achieve. This allows you to wind down for the evening and feel refreshed, planned and ready to hit the ground running the next morning! ✨𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬- Set clear working hours! "Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax." 🧘♂️ In honour of Mental Health Awareness Week, I took some much-needed time to myself, embracing the stunning scenery and vibrant culture of beautiful Mallorca. 🌴 Working in health & wellbeing, I understand the profound impact that taking time to unwind and recharge can have on our mental health. While in Mallorca, I managed to keep active, soaking in the breath-taking landscapes, enjoying the local food, and spending quality time with my family. It was a perfect blend of healthy living and scenic exploration, reminding me of the simple joys of being active and present in the moment. This getaway served as a powerful reminder of the importance of self-care. In our busy lives, it's easy to overlook the necessity of taking breaks and nurturing our own wellbeing. Yet, these moments of pause and reflection are crucial for maintaining our mental health and overall happiness. Our recent workplace data at ART Health Solutions supports this mindset: ● A progressive increase in happiness and productivity on days where we take more steps – 3% happier taking 8,000-10,000 steps, an additional 3% happier taking 10,000-12,000 steps, and another 2% happier when achieving more than 12,000 steps in a day (an overall 8% increase in happiness compared to <8,000 steps!). ● Having an active break during the working day can positively impact your energy levels – 88% of participants in a sprint study felt less tired after an active break. ● Incorporating an active part of your commute can help increase activity, improve sleep, and enhance performance – we found a 7% improvement in cognitive performance following an active commute compared to a non-active one. I encourage everyone to find their own way to unwind and recharge.
