Upstream Innovation is where the magic is! Today I spoke with Engineering Masters students at Murdoch University, sharing some insights from my time with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, particularly focusing on my love of upstream innovation. I've been fortunate to get to continue engaging with this topic through my work with Evolveable Consulting. Ashley Olsson from Evolveable sat in, and summarised my session brilliantly, so I'll steal his key takeaways: ➡ Diverse Innovation Types: Innovation goes beyond just technology. Embracing various forms of innovation, such as mindset, business model and system innovation, is crucial for nurturing a circular economy. ➡Systems Thinking: Understanding interconnected systems is vital for effective problem-solving. Adopting a systems thinking approach enables the development of sustainable solutions that benefit the entire value chain. ➡Leveraging Innovation for Sustainability: Innovation acts as a catalyst for driving sustainability initiatives within companies. By leveraging innovation, companies can create value while minimising their impact. ➡Design Stage Intervention: The design phase is the most critical opportunity to address the root cause. Strategic decisions during this stage can significantly influence a product or project's impact. ➡Lifecycle Assessment Blindspots: While lifecycle assessments are valuable, it's important to recognise their limitations when considering system-level impacts.

Making the design and manufacturing of #digitaltechnologies more #sustainable is the focus of a new research network that has received £2 million of funding from EPSRC. The Digital Innovation and Circular Economy (DICE) Network+ is a three-year programme and comprises 11 investigators from nine UK universities, including The University of Salford's Prof Mandy Parkinson. On the network, Mandy, commented: "while technological advancements are pivotal, the integration of interdisciplinary approaches is equally vital. By combining insights from various fields, we can ensure that our innovations are not only cutting-edge, but also sustainably sound. This holistic methodology will help us address complex challenges more comprehensively, fostering a resilient ecosystem that benefits society at large. “The DICE network brings together some of the UK’s leading experts in this space, to help foster a circular economy across various sectors, ultimately paving the way for sustainable innovation.” Find out more about the network here: https://lnkd.in/eT4eFiKt

Meet us at the Life Cycle Innovation Conference 2024 in Berlin! 🌿 Our team, including Anna Ossolińska, Laura Stellner, Marvin Chromow, Jonas Gossen , Oskar Vögler and Arne Kätelhön, will be attending the 4th #LCIC2024 from July 3-5, 2024! This hybrid event offers both in-person and digital participation, complete with livestreaming and a diverse program. 🤗 We are happy to see that awareness about sufficiency is expanding. It was recently the subject of an E4S conference at EPFL, ‘Showcase 2030, Embracing sufficiency in innovation’. Our key takeaways from the event are: 🗝 Key takeaways: - Yamina Saheb’s proposal to integrate the 2nd law of thermodynamics to economics and apply it to natural resources, ao as to internalize social and environmental costs. - We need a mindset shift; we need to redefine the meaning of value and happiness. - There is a need for new indicators and metrics because we can only manage what we can measure. ⛔ Obstacles to sufficiency: - The fear of the unknown and the need to increase precedence and trust. - Lack of education and awareness. - A lack of systems thinking in sufficiency in a hyperconnected and inter-dependent world. 💡 Ideas for moving forward: - Overcoming obstacles is facilitated through collaboration. - Focus on circularity: make everything we have everything we need. - Harness the power of storytelling. We need words and narratives to understand urgency and move to action. The conference showed that there is still a lot of work to be done around the education and awareness concerning sufficiency.
