This #NationalSeafoodMonth, we recognize the role that more U.S. #aquaculture can play in providing a sustainable, healthy, and local seafood supply in complement to our nation’s wild fisheries. NOAA Fisheries recently released their National Seafood Strategy Implementation Plan, which includes the goal of increasing sustainable U.S. aquaculture production to help strengthen the overall seafood industry. Cameroon participates in Blue Food Forum in Tanzania The country is one of twelve covered by the FAO's FISH4ACP program, which aims to address some of the challenges underlying the development of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. Led by FISH4ACP, the global forum on blue food value chains will take place on 12-13 September 2024 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to explore how they can help transform food systems and feed a growing world population while preserving the health of the planet. The event will bring together fisheries ministers, delegates, partners and non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), as well as the twelve beneficiary countries of this United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) program, including Cameroon through its shrimp fisheries value chain development project. In Cameroon, shrimp is caught by industrial and artisanal fishermen, with production estimated at 5,000 tonnes per year. However, inappropriate fishing gear and techniques are having a negative impact on the environment. The use of small-mesh nets, resulting in high by-catch, or fishing in spawning grounds are some of the problems reported in the artisanal segment of the fishery. The sector also suffers significant post-harvest losses due to poor handling, preservation, processing, storage and transport practices. This has a negative impact on the livelihoods of fishing communities and reduces marketing opportunities for shrimp. In June 2021, FISH4ACP, an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) to support the sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture, began operations in Cameroon. Funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by FAO, it aims to help the country make its shrimp sector more competitive and sustainable. The Blue Food Forum is an important platform for sharing knowledge generated by FISH4ACP and other initiatives with public and private sector representatives, value chain experts and practitioners, partner organisations and the donor community. It will focus on good practices and lessons learnt from the aquatic food value chain development efforts of FISH4ACP and other value chain initiatives. Cameroon will make a special contribution by presenting good practices in environmental protection in small scale fisheries and shrimp processing techniques, which will be shared with all participants. Through FISH4ACP, FAO promotes responsible and sustainable fishing and processing techniques to increase the productivity and sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture value chains in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

SFP published a paper in “Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems” – that provides details of two newly developed scoring methods to assess the sustainability of small-scale fisheries. To date, market-based tools have largely overlooked co-management principles and security of tenure rights in their standards. The paper develops two new scoring methods for FishSource – SFP’s publicly available online resource about the status of fisheries, fish stocks, and aquaculture – to assess key aspects of the sustainability performance of small-scale fisheries. The goal of these methods is to help seafood buyers take positive actions toward improving sustainability performance while contributing to advancing the well-being of small-scale fishing communities. The paper was co-authored by: Hugh Govan, Enrique Alonso Población, Susana Segurado, Rolando Labraña-Cornejo, Pedro Ferreiro Velasco Ferreiro-Velasco, Miguel Andreu-Cazenave Read the paper here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eFudhEFc #science #research #sustainableseafood #seafood #smallscalefishing #fishingcommunities

July 15, 2024, Juneau, AK – The Certified Seafood Collaborative (CSC) is pleased to announce that the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery (white, brown, and pink shrimp) for all five Gulf states and federal waters has achieved Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Certification. This is the first shrimp fishery certified to the RFM Standard. RFM Certification requires fisheries meet RFM Standard criteria which evaluate fisheries in four key areas: A) the fisheries management system; B) science and stock assessment activities, and the precautionary approach; C) management measures, implementation, monitoring, and control; and D) serious impacts of the fishery on the ecosystem. Third-party certification body Global Trust awarded the certification after a thorough evaluation of the Gulf of Mexico Shrimp fishery as reported in the Final Assessment Report. “Congratulations to the American Shrimp Processors Association (ASPA) and the entire Gulf of Mexico shrimp industry for meeting RFM’s comprehensive fishery standard. As the largest shrimp fishery in the U.S., it’s a testament to its sound fisheries management and commitment to the sustainability of their fishery,” said Mark Fina, CSC RFM Board Chair. Earning RFM Certification shows the fishery’s commitment to the long-term health of the Gulf shrimp ecosystem, the communities that depend on it, and the customers seeking sustainable seafood.

News from SFP 📰 Major squid importers have published sourcing information on SFP's transparency platform, the Ocean Disclosure Project 📣 As the first precompetitive collaboration to participate in ODP, this is a significant step for the squid industry to publicly disclose sourcing information. 21 out of 22 participants of SFP's Global Squid Supply Chain Roundtable have published a profile containing a list of fisheries supplying squid, alongside information on the sustainability and environmental impact of those fisheries. Carmen GONZALEZ VALLES MARTINEZ Gonzalez-Valles Martinez, Director of supply chain roundtables at Sustainable Fisheries Partnership said, “By participating in the ODP, we have gained a better understanding of the Squid SR’s representativeness in the global squid supply chain and its leverage by fishery. As a result, we will be actively seeking to engage new companies and new markets in the Squid SR to further advance its leverage in global squid supply chains.” From Undercurrent News ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/d86tjAFC #seafood #sustainableseafood #squidfisheries #fisheries #squid #seafoodsupplychains

🐟The Fisheries and Seafood Scheme (FaSS) reopened for grant applications but quickly closed again due to an overwhelming demand. An additional £2 million of funding was been made available to support England’s seafood sector, highlighting the need for such funding and the importance of acting quickly! 🐟The scheme is administered by Marine Management Organisation (MMO) on behalf of the Defra and is designed to help the fisheries and seafood sector in a number of ways. Health and safety of fishing crews, the value and quality of fisheries products, modifications that improve the energy efficiency of vessels, mitigating climate change, and innovations that support the longevity and diversification of the seafood sector all come within the aims of the scheme. 🐟FaSS awarded over £27 million to over 1,300 fisheries projects in England since it opened in May 2021. The additional funding provides an opportunity for further projects to receive funding over the next year. 🐟All projects funded by FaSS need to be completed by the time the scheme closes on 31 March 2025. Unfortunately, applications received prior to midday on 10th June are not being considered. We will try our best to keep you informed if the pot is replenished. For more information about FaSS, see: https://lnkd.in/dgsXvbv
