As the UAE gears toward net zero by 2050, existing buildings will need to undergo energy retrofitting, a complex and expensive process. At the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) Retrofit Summit, Malika Shaikhutdinova led a panel discussion on green financing for retrofit projects, exploring the challenges faced by companies seeking financing to drive these much-needed transformations. Abu Dhabi's transition from diesel to renewable energy for public transport is set to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by over 100,000 tonnes. The city is already seeing significant improvements in air quality, thanks to its growing fleet of green buses powered by hydrogen and electricity. Currently, 19 green buses operate, with one on Route 65 between Marina Mall and Shams Boutique on Al Reem Island, and another on Route 160 serving regional routes. Exciting News! Dubai has updated its Demand Side Management Strategy with a new timeline extending to 2050, highlighting the urgent need for advanced efficiency strategies. Key Highlights: -Directive issued by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, in line with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision for sustainable development. -Targets a 50% reduction in energy and water demand by 2050 compared to business as usual. -Introduces 7 key implementing mechanisms: Policies and Regulations, Data and M&V, Government Support and Leadership, Awareness and Recognition, Financing, R&D and Innovation, and Freezone Alignment and Collaboration. -Focuses on achieving significant savings in electricity, water, and transport fuel consumption. -Adds 12 new programs to drive efficiency across various sectors, including Net Zero Ready Buildings, Efficient Cooling, and Smart Charging. This strategy not only aims to establish Dubai as a global benchmark for energy efficiency but also aligns with the UAE Net Zero Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.
