🇹🇴🌊 “Sea-level rise needs to be addressed comprehensively, and urgently by the international community. We need better cooperation, new partnerships and more resources to support the adaptation journeys of our affected communities.” This week we are at the SIDS4 conference in Antigua & Barbuda, talking to people about their takeaways from the conference and what they take with them to the Sea-Level Rise Summit on 25 September in New York City during UNGA79. Listen to our interview with the Prime Minister of Tonga, H.E. Siaosi Sovaleni, about the impacts of sea-level rise in the Pacific.

The United Nations Civil Society Conference annually draws more than 3,000 participants from over 100 countries, representing 700+ civil society organizations. It serves as a platform for dialogue among senior UN officials, global civil society groups, academics, media, government, and private sector, focusing on pressing global issues. Emphasizing collaboration between local communities and global bodies, it fosters networking and sharing of insights and best practices. This year marks the 69th conference, the first to be held in Africa, specifically Nairobi, under the theme ‘Summit of the Future’. Its outcomes will feed into the Pact for the Future, to be adopted at the September 2024 Summit of the Future. The Africa Centre for Sustainable and Inclusive Development is happy to have facilitated accreditation of three youth representatives, aligning with our focus on marginalized communities based on various parameters including population context. The participation of the youth underscores their pivotal role in shaping the future discussed at the conference. Our Executive Director, Salome Owuonda, will speak at a side event co-organized by YOUNGO and The Centre for African Policy, focusing on empowering women and girls for climate resilience in Africa. This event is scheduled for Saturday, May 11th, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at the Westlands Banquet Centre. We are optimistic about the conference’s potential to advance global wellbeing of the people and the planet, echoing the conference’s Co-Chair Carole Ageng’o’s belief that the civil society’s engagement is vital for a better-prepared international system, addressing current and future challenges for the sake of humanity and generations to come.
