By rethinking how materials and energy flow through urban spaces, we can design adaptable, resilient environments that minimize waste and maximize resource use. Yesterday, invited by my former student at the School of Architecture and Environmental Studies of Universidad del Diseño, and colleague Vicky Adis, I lectured at the School of Architecture of Universidad Latina. The topic of the talk was "Architecture Here and Now. Theoretical-Critical-Ethical Architectural Thinking," with yet another subtitle: "How should we think and make architecture in Costa Rica?"

Daniel Libeskind, a renowned Polish-American architect famously known for designing the Jewish Museum in Berlin, emphasizes that even though a building is finished, it becomes part of a new dynamic: how people will occupy it, use it, and think about it. Libeskind, born in 1946 in Łódź, Poland, is also celebrated for his master plan to reconstruct the World Trade Center site in New York. His architectural approach often incorporates elements of history, memory, and symbolism, making his designs both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. Great legacies endure through remembrance: On this day in 1969, architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe passed away in Chicago, Illinois. Over five decades later, we continue to admire his work and promote the knowledge of his legacy. ✨ In this sense, in addition to preserving and disseminating knowledge about the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, through a variety of cultural and academic activities, promotes the study of the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich and the Modern Movement, as well as debate and awareness of issues related to contemporary architecture and urbanism. Among their key initiatives is the organisation, jointly with the European Commission, of the EUmies Awards, one of the most prestigious of all European architecture prizes. I am joining with my research center (Instituto de Estudos Medievais, from NOVA FCSH) Prof. Pasquale Cucco (Università degli Studi di Salerno) and Prof. Pietro Vecchi (Aichi Shukutoku University), as guest editor.
