Earlier this week we welcomed at the XLAB in GEA Wallau our customers from Argentina and Chile. We could show them all of our innovations in slicing and packaging for fish and meat. They visited as well other test centers from GEA in Bakel and Weert to know more about our solutions for food processing and vertical packaging. We at PROBAT are constantly working on exciting projects and new innovations and are therefore thrilled to report on another research cooperation. In a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture we collaborate with the University of Bremen’s Institute of Automation Technology to further improve the control systems for our coffee roasters. The aim is to achieve optimal coffee roasting with consistent quality while using minimal energy by using a Model Predictive Control (MPC) system based on Digital Twins. This effort is necessary because robustly reproducing the roasting of coffee beans, while adhering to high-quality standards, poses a challenge to control engineering. The complexity arises from two key factors: the coordination of various actuators within the coffee roaster and the inherently non-linear thermal behavior exhibited by coffee beans during roasting. The application of Model Predictive Control utilising Digital Twins as representations for both the roaster and the beans appears capable to overcome these challenges.
