Our recent publication 'Exploring the accessibility of deformed digital heritage models' finally came through! 😀 Book chapter (Elsevier) Pre-press: https://lnkd.in/d_UgKuJh Pre-press: https://lnkd.in/d6Bxu8vD The concept of accessibility has been examined by the scientific community in various fields such as education, health care, social inclusion, disabilities, transport, and tourism. Regarding heritage, the European Commission’s efforts toward accessible cultural heritage are highlighted, along with the use of digitization and modeling technologies for complex heritage shapes. Thus, this chapter explores relevant scientific research into the accessibility of digital heritage models that represent the assets’ real condition, that is, as-is or as-built models produced using advanced digitization and modeling technologies. The study emphasizes the importance of both physical and semantic aspects of heritage conservation and the need for public awareness and cooperation toward the aimed accessibility. The methodology addresses the search for publications in Scopus and Web of Science and their filtering based on inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure documents related to the accessibility of deformed digital heritage models are considered. The research concludes that creating accessible deformed digital heritage models is crucial for inclusion and participation from the public and stakeholders, and while some studies achieve accurate as-built geometries and accessibility, there is room for improvement. Delighted that the publication of our chapter, "Actor-Network Theory as a Theory of Space," in the Handbook of Qualitative and Visual Methods in Spatial Research coincides perfectly with the start of the #4SEASST2024 conference in Amsterdam! In this chapter, Ignacio Farías and I explore the multifaceted trajectory of Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and its productive applications as a theory of space. There are three main lessons to be learned: 1) Interconnectedness of Actors: ANT reveals the intricate networks of human and non-human actors that shape our spatial environments. By understanding these connections, we gain insights into the complexities of spatial dynamics. 2) Space as a Hybrid: ANT frames space not just as a physical entity but as a hybrid construct of social, technical, and material elements. This perspective allows us to see how diverse factors converge to form spatial realities. 3) Constructing Worlds: ANT shows that spaces are not pre-existing but are continuously constructed through interactions. This view emphasizes the fluidity and multiplicity of spaces, encouraging us to consider the ongoing processes that create and transform them. ANT offers a unique lens to understand how spaces are both hybrids and worlds, constantly shaped by the interplay of various actors and forces. Archival Science and Social Communication: Intersections In an increasingly digital and interconnected world, the intersection between Archival Science and Social Communication emerges as a fertile ground for the exchange of knowledge and innovative practices. Archival Science, with its focus on the management and preservation of documents, finds in Social Communication a strategic partner in the dissemination and valorization of information. Effective communication of archives is essential to ensure their relevance and accessibility, making the collaboration between archivists and communication professionals a key element in promoting transparency, institutional memory, and public engagement. Through well-crafted communication strategies, archives can gain visibility, expanding their impact and reach. On the other hand, Archival Science contributes to Social Communication by providing solid foundations for the efficient organization and retrieval of information, crucial for the production of relevant and reliable content. The preservation of collective memory through archives also enriches communicational and organizational narratives, offering historical and cultural contexts that enhance the content. In this dynamic scenario, the integration between Archival Science and Social Communication proves to be a two-way street, where care for information and its responsible dissemination complement each other. By joining forces, these areas can enhance their positive impacts on society, promoting a culture of transparency, access to information, and preservation of documentary heritage. #ArchivalScience #SocialCommunication #InformationManagement #Transparency #InstitutionalMemory #Innovation #ProfessionalCollaboration

What is materiality and why is it important? Materiality, if you haven’t already guessed, is all about stuff – physical things. As researchers we’re constantly looking into the impact of stuff in the daily lives of consumers and the participants in our projects. Qualitative methods often rely on language to express and communicate meaningful interactions and the importance of the matter that we use in our day-to-day lives, but what happens when language isn’t enough? That description is on the tip of your tongue, but you don’t have the right words? Material methods are not new techniques – they’ve been around for long time. Their brilliance rests on the principle that they are embedded in the reality of daily life. They involve bringing to life not only the impact material stuff has, but permit participants to express themselves differently and explore more discursive topics. Matter allows us to communicate and express - things are often imbued with cultural meanings, or acquire them over time, but on a fundamental level they facilitate action. Things allow us to live our life the way we need to and want to. Including matter and material methods in our toolkits can provide participants with a framework for expressing themselves in different ways; allowing them to problem solve, tackle discursive issues, explore liminalities and so much more. Some techniques include observational sketching, follow the thing, collages, mapping, photography and much more! Come join us on the 9th October to hear myself and Natalie Edwards in this year’s #MRS&more Virtual Conference talk about materiality and material methods in the context of qualitative and cultural research! https://lnkd.in/efmdP5qt #MRS #MarketResearch #QualitativeResearch #QualMethods #Culture #CulturalResearch #PeopleMatter #MatterMatters #TruthMatters

I have more and more thoughts lately about mixing the science and art world with the help of Art Based Research (ABR). Integrating artistic practices and knowledge with that of science through co-creation, can create cultural, ecological and publically relevant projects using different forms of art. Challenging socio-ecological matters by these projects can facilitate transformation. #ArtBasedResearch #SocialEcological #EnvironmentalArt #Art #Science https://lnkd.in/e4Au8wzm https://lnkd.in/ee5P4936
