On Tuesday, we hosted the impactful "You Just Never Know" program at G-PAC for Year 11 students across Geelong and surrounding areas. Our guest speakers shared powerful stories about road safety, emphasizing the importance of caution. Students even had the chance to see a wreck first hand. This was our third and fourth session this year, and we are looking forward for the program to run again next year.

Excellent news. Probably beyond the scope of the OEP, but ought to be within someones scope, is the freedom of Government to lie about its policies, its long term failure to conduct genuinely impartial evaluation of their effectiveness (not just the narrow VFM points the UK National Audit Office is entitled to examine, and not the toothless apparently random inquiries of the EAC), and the lack of barriers to Government coming up with bonkers 'environmental' policies for which there is zero evidential justification. Third sector colleagues frequently ask "how are they allowed to come up with policies which go against all the evidence??" To which the real answer is that Govt stupidity is not illegal, but Governments answer is to blame the electorate. Scientific evidence cannot be the sole determinant of public policy (imagine the consequences) but it shouldn't be skewed hidden lied about or ignored either. I'd love a Govt with the bottle to say "Yes the science says this but we are going to do that instead because we think it's more important than the science". Then there's the space for an honest debate. At present there isn't. This isn't a party political point - I made the same points to Government when working for Government under previous political parties (coalition, Labour, and Conservative).
It’s been a busy day at the OEP HQ today, as we welcomed members of our new College of Experts for an introduction event. Lots of great conversation and food for thought. Thanks to all who attended.

Do you ever look at the natural environment and think we can and should do better? A multitude of government policies and initiatives talk about delivering cleaner air, cleaner water and improved ecosystem function (e.g. flood mitigation, increased biodiversity etc), but are these policies ambitious enough and, are they being implemented according to the timelines described across the various policy documents? The Office for Environmental Protection (The OEP) is a public body that protects and improves the environment by holding government and other public authorities to account. To supplement the expertise within the organisation, the OEP created a College of Experts (around 50 volunteers). The College includes experts in the monitoring and implementation of environmental law, the natural, economic, and social sciences and those involved in the practical delivery of environmental strategies. As a member of the college, we volunteer our experience and knowledge to contribute across the remit of the OEP, including water, marine, land use and agriculture, biodiversity, soil health, waste and chemicals. Last week we had our first face to face meeting. It is a privilege to be part of this group and to support the OEP in their efforts to keep environmental improvement centre stage. The UK is the sixth-largest national economy in the world, measured by nominal gross domestic product (GDP). In terms of how we manage our environment, we can and should do better. #environment, #sustainability, #environmental law

Some of our team is off to Florida today to attend the @bjoremspeech cruise! Bjorem Speech is hosting a 3 night cruise for SLPs to learn from some amazing speakers, including @jenbjorem @cariebert.semimars @grahamspeechtherapy @ckochslp @laurenklineslp @speechtothecore @adventuresinspeechpathology @thelisteningslp While this is an extraordinary (aka AMAZING :) way to get PD hours, it got us thinking - how often do you seek out professional development opportunities? Is it more because you have to for your recertification/license, or because you actually want to? The field of special education evolves so fast that techniques, skills, and technologies become obsolete within five to 10 years. That is why being a lifelong learner plays an important role in the educational process. It helps educators and therapists incorporate new tools and strategies into the learning process to boost students’ learning. Who are you learning from? Any favorite presenters or conferences? Please share in the comments below?

Another FEBS Education and Training Committee meeting has come to an end. It’s truly inspiring to share passions and ideas with such incredible people, all united in the mission to create opportunities for future generations to grasp – opportunities for a better world that we are all striving to build. Suddenly, I find myself in a cab heading to the airport, wrapped in self-reflection. I’m recalling these past few days filled with freedom, beautiful smiles, passionate dreams, and the almost childlike sparkles in the eyes of these amazing individuals from all across FEBS, from all over Europe. But then, a familiar feeling creeps in, and a nostalgic smile forms on my face. My thoughts drift back to everyday life: Did I close the windows? I must water my plants tonight. Do I have any milk for tomorrow's morning coffee? Oh, and don’t forget about beer night with friends tomorrow! And just like that, a quiet laugh fills the space around me. Dream big, travel far, learn and teach with passion, but never forget a small almost invisible spot on the world map called HOME. #PersonalReflection, #FEBSEducationAndTraining, #EducationMatters, #FEBSCommunity, #HomeAndAway, #ProfessionalGrowth, #Collaboration, #PassionForLearning, #GlobalConnections,#FutureGenerations

This is such an important report which shines a light on the extreme challenge that faces our sector, which we all have a moral imperative to address. Never before has the scale of exclusion, been so extreme or so common place. Thank you to the phenomenal Kiran Gill The Difference and Pepe DiIasio Association of School and College Leaders for forming and chairing the ‘Who’s Losing Learning?’ Solutions Council to ensure that voices across the sector, and across different functions of civil society come together to grasp the thorny challenge head on and work together on real solutions that we can enact to address this and stem the tide. At Lift Schools, we believe that every child should benefit from an excellent education, in every classroom, every day. That’s why I’m honoured to sit on the solutions council working with others to address something which I feel so strongly about, and have witnessed the impact of first hand. In 2024, it is wrong that the scale of the challenge is more profound now than ever. We must as a sector, as a country, as a society, right this wrong and do all we can to create an inclusive educational experience which allows all young people, regardless of background, identity, ethnicity, or SEN status to flourish, learn and feel safe. #WhosLosingLearning #EductionalSolutions #SolutionsCouncil
The Difference delighted to be joined by Secretary of State Bridget Phillipson as part of the first meeting of the Who is Losing Learning Solutions council, chaired by Pepe DiIasio General Secretary of ASCL. Read more about the launch of our new report here: https://lnkd.in/e6JJC3ub

In their event planning and coordination class this fall, University of Kentucky students engaged in a group project that went beyond the classroom, allowing them to serve both UK and the city of Lexington. The course, HMT 570, is offered by the UK Department of Retailing and Tourism Management. Through the course, students engage in hands-on event planning, enhancing their skills in coordination, communication and problem solving while providing valuable service to the local community. “By integrating community needs into their projects, HMT 570 students are making a lasting impact and exemplifying the values of service, collaboration, and social responsibility,” said associate professor Tracy Lu.
