Every day, we each have a choice: uphold the status quo or replace it with something better. As we begin the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, if you are wondering what more you can do to take action—you are in the right place. For the next 16 Days, we will be sharing 16 practical and evidence-based ways to accelerate gender equality in your workplace. They are not in order of importance, nor is one more urgent than the other. Instead, this work requires each of us to take responsibility and make change wherever we can, with whatever we have. Let’s get started… 1️⃣ Check to see if your organisation has a Family Violence policy. And if not, why not? What we know, statistically speaking, is that there will not only be people in your organisation who are victim/survivors of violence—there will be perpetrators too. Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 🧡 it's also the beginning of the #16DaysofActivism. I feel so privileged to work with organisations like GenderWorks Australia and create campaigns like this designed to make workplaces (and the world) safer for women and gender-diverse people. If you're keen to know what more you can do to accelerate #genderequality in your workplace, give GenderWorks Australia a follow and connect with their excellent co-founders Kathy Oliver and Jen Branscombe. So what'll it be...uphold the status quo, or replace it with something better? #16Days16Ways #EndVAW

Gender-transformative messaging is a powerful tool in the prevention of violence against women and girls (VAWG). Tailoring prevention strategies to challenge harmful beliefs, norms, and behaviors among both specific and general populations is essential for reshaping attitudes toward gender equality and addressing the root causes of VAWG. The Communicating Equality project created two Discussion Guides to support organizations in this work: >> Guide 1: Summarizes current approaches to gender-transformative prevention messaging for specific and general populations and invites thinking on public communication in the Canadian context: https://buff.ly/41354tK >> Guide 2: Designed for organizations working with men and boys, this guide provides examples of messaging approaches that promote healthier masculinities and support men and boys in acting to prevent VAWG: https://buff.ly/4102V1X This project was funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada. #EndVAWG #CommunicatingEquality #GenderEquality #ViolencePrevention #PrimaryPrevention #NoExcuse #16Days

Discussion during day 2 of Humanitatian Regional Partnership Week 2024: Navigating sensitive topics and securing support from governments can be challenging when advocating for women's and gender issues. To achieve true gender equality, we must adopt a holistic approach, addressing women's different issues from women with disability, glass ceiling to thrive in career to domestic violence issues. Empowering women, especially in the face of deeply rooted gender norms, is much needed! #GenderEquality #WomenEmpowerment #SocialJustice #HRPW2024

🔶 Engaging men to end violence against women 🔶 Violence against women is not just a women’s issue – it’s a societal issue. At Women for Women International, we are convinced that creating safer, more equitable communities requires the active participation of everyone, including men. Through our Men’s Engagement Programme, we work with men in conflict-affected areas to challenge harmful gender norms, encourage respectful behavior, and foster healthier relationships. By tackling the root causes of gender-based violence, men become allies in building a world where women can live equally and in safety. In this year’s #16DaysOfActivism, let’s remember: true change happens when we come together to challenge inequality and dismantle the systems that perpetuate violence. Join us in standing against violence and for gender equality. Together, we can create a futurewhere every woman and girl can thrive. 🧡 #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #MensEngagement #GenderEquality #SupportWomen #EndVAW #NoExcuse #16Days #EliminationOfViolenceAgainstWomen

Research Insights: Utilising Data and Evidence Access to robust data and evidence is crucial. Research by Stevenson and Wootten (2020) shows that data-driven approaches lead to better decision-making and outcomes. White Ribbon Day sees the start of 16 Days of Action against domestic and sexual violence. White Ribbon is a campaign led by men, aimed at putting an end to male violence against women. Men across the globe raise awareness and show their support for the campaign by wearing a white ribbon. According to the Office for National Statistics, in the UK between April 2020 and March 2021, 117 women were murdered in England and Wales, 109 of which were killed by a man. Women are disproportionately killed at the hands of men, making #WhiteRibbonDay an awareness day of vital importance. Culture change doesn’t happen overnight, but we can end men’s violence against women and girls in our lifetimes. This year we’re encouraging men to hold themselves accountable to women, and to each other, so we can affect positive behaviour change to transform harmful cultures. Gender equality is key to making this culture change happen. Gender equality is achievable if men and boys understand and assume their responsibility as allies. Violence experienced by women and girls takes many forms. Some behaviours and words may seem ‘harmless’ but normalising them ignores the short- and long-term effects on women and can lead to more extreme violence.
