In the latest episode of ANT1's show "Brave New Greece," titled "Brave New Sea," a collaborative effort by αθηΝΕΑ and elculture, supported by the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, experts and scientific collaborators converge to address the pressing issue of marine pollution and propose immediate solutions crucial for the preservation of our seas. During his appearance on the episode, Prof. George Papatheodorou, Director of Oceanus-Lab, emphasized on how oceans, crucial regulators of the global climate, are now grappling with severe plastic pollution, particularly evident in the Mediterranean Sea, a historical cradle of civilization. This environmental crisis, compounded by the climate emergency, knows no boundaries, with plastic waste traveling vast distances—for example, from Greek rivers to Albania's shores in a year. On a local scale, the "LIFE DEBAG" initiative on Syros stands out as a success, reducing plastic bag usage through community education and cloth tote bag adoption, achieving a remarkable 60% decrease in plastic pollution along Syros' coast and underwater ecosystems over four years. Dr. Papatheodorou also highlighted the critical challenge of inconsistent data in accurately assessing global ocean pollution, essential for guiding future research and policy efforts. Meanwhile, the Saronic Gulf near Athens and Piraeus presents stark evidence as Greece's most polluted bay, with specific seabed areas harboring alarming concentrations of debris, exceeding 200,000 pieces per square kilometer. hashtag#marinepollution hashtag#marinedebris hashtag#marinelitter hashtag#plastic hashtag#microplastics hashtag#typhoon hashtag#lifedebag hashtag#oceanuslab hashtag#oceanography hashtag#universityofpatras

🌿 Honoring the Past, Building a Better Future 🌍 Today, Croatia marks the Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Homeland War and remembers the tragic events in Vukovar and Škabrnja. It is a day of reflection, respect, and empathy for all those who have suffered unimaginable losses. As we pause to honor those who gave their lives and the families who continue to carry the weight of this history, we are reminded of the importance of peace and unity. Tourism, as an industry of connection and understanding, has a unique role in fostering these values. It transcends borders, celebrates cultural diversity, and brings people together — essentially becoming an industry of peace. At Meet in Croatia, we believe that sustainable tourism is not just about preserving natural beauty — it’s about caring for the society that makes a destination truly special. By nurturing both our communities and our environment, we contribute to a future where resilience and compassion go hand in hand. Let us honor the memories of the past while striving to create a world where peace and sustainability guide our actions. #croatia

Mount Everest, a symbol of natural wonder, is currently facing a significant environmental challenge with approximately 200 tons of waste left behind annually due to surging tourism. This mounting waste problem emphasizes the urgent need for technological innovations and responsible tourism to protect this fragile environment. During my visits to mountainous regions, I’ve witnessed firsthand the delicate balance between adventure and preservation. What steps can we take to ensure that our passion for exploration doesn't compromise our planet’s pristine beauty? The NeverRest Project is leading the way in technological solutions, aiming to implement sustainable waste management practices such as portable sanitation facilities, which could drastically reduce the waste left by trekkers and climbers. Let's support initiatives that promote a 'leave no trace' philosophy, adhering to stricter regulations and educating those who embark on this journey. Preserving Mount Everest for future generations requires collective action and commitment to sustainable practices. What are your thoughts on how we can balance tourism and conservation? 🤔 #MountEverest #WasteManagement #SustainableTourism #EnvironmentalInnovation #ResponsibleTravel

The #glaciers of Grindelwald are incomparably beautiful. Even on a recent snowy day, visitors from the top of the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe, seemed to be mesmerized by the solid ice running through the alpine gorge. No wonder it's a UNESCO world heritage site, and people want to preserve it. But will hydroelectric power, a food waste program or a solar farm really make a difference? When it comes to tourism and sustainability, that is the enduring question. Why bother when just downwind there are coal-powered plants and where sustainability is just a marketing gimmick? For the Swiss, and particularly for #Grindelwalders, watching their beloved glaciers recede a little bit every year has spurred them into action. They are doing everything in their power to preserve their heritage, even though they know it will not be enough. https://lnkd.in/dqSAYfDg #tourism #Tourisminsights #pakistan #tourismindustry #AtharJ #ecotourism #sustainabletourism #sustainability #sustainabledevelopment #tourismmarketing #60seconds
