Coming from human-centered design research, I found this read on the shift from design thinking to community-powered design intriguing. In my opinion, community-powered design emphasizes the democratizing value of product and service design coming from human-centered design even more. At Aalto University the project of the Aalto test site by the Aalto CS major program is a great example of community-empowered innovation structures. Throughout the year, the university community works hand in hand and slowly builds up a place of co-creation with all kinds of community-oriented innovations. For example, an A-frame community home, an outdoor kitchen, or an own biogas plant. Do they produce big scale-up products like a start-up? No. They develop what adds meaning and value to their life and experiences. When we manage to scale up the community-driven builder and maker structures, humans can become more empowered and less dependent on capitalist products and services. From my point of view, community-powered structures can lead to a more socially sustainable and equal life because people are embedded in an embodied experience of support and meaning where they can experience self-efficiency. And these values come rare in a more and more automated world. I was able to attend some amazing workshops this year, led by some incredible designers. I am super grateful to be a part of a generous community that truly models the sparks, ideas, insights and unique learning that happen best through well-designed collaboration. I had the good fortune to attend a particularly impactful session on "Designing for Sustainability: Reimagining Service Experiences Using Service Origami" led by Shreya Dhawan and James Morelli from Harmonic Design at the Global Service Design Conference. The workshop was a masterclass in a service design method, Service Origami, a powerful visualization technique for mapping complex service ecosystems and evaluating experiences and opportunities through multiple strategic lenses, in this case, sustainability. Our deep dive into business travel revealed the nuanced challenges and opportunities for sustainable design and innovation. Sustainability is no longer a peripheral consideration but a core strategic imperative in our rapidly evolving landscape with increasingly apparent global climate impacts. Organizations now have a need to reimagine their products and services through circular, environmental and social impact lenses. Jukka Savolainen talks about the transformative power of design and creativity in this Scandinavian MIND's article, well worth reading. 'Today, design is so much broader, it covers all areas of life, whether it’s the physical world, the virtual world, or the digital worlds that we now live in as well. This transformative power of design is so important to understand. — I like the way Aalto University talks about ’radical creativity.’ The core idea of radical creativity is to bring creativity and creative thinking into the equation in order to create new solutions, not to just improve on what we have. It’s about bringing creativity and cross-disciplinary perspectives into processes, the way we work, and how we do it, whether it’s in governmental structures and decision-making or in organisations and companies — and how to make products and services. It’s a very, very big change and it’s difficult to get people to understand the depth of the change that we are facing." #radicalcreativity

#Design thinking is exceedingly valuable as a motivation and framework for "radical collaboration," the most radical of which instantiates sustained multi-stakeholder relationships across remits of the respective stakeholders. But thinking is not action, and action is meaningless unless actors are thoughtfully engaged sufficiently long and broadly to experience #consequences of designs in their implementation. Herein lies the promise of design thinking as one, but only one, attribute of a sociotechnical #system of innovation. Design thinking must not only be coupled intimately with implementation. In my experience in the most agile and forward-looking components of the DoD and NASA, design thinking must emerge from implementation. Innovation can occur on the demand side as well as the supply side, but this requires a radically different kind of collaboration. Design thinking-in-action occurs elegantly when scientists, engineers and practitioners are engaged together in a multi-perspectival assessment of how designs are actually used by people who haven't designed them; that is, free from hegemonic #bias of presumed solutions on the identification of #needs and requirements that always are ambiguous and uncertain. The requisite enterprise for collaboration, of necessity, crosses the remits of organizations and the interests of stakeholders. The necessity of enterprises without borders--a non sequitur to many--is why design thinking eventually fails as a competency when it is internalized or, in essence, institutionalized. #Outsiders are needed to break frames in ways that purposely unify the art of the possible with the art of praxis. In truly radical collaboration, all participants are outsiders with respect to each other. Collaborative innovation emerges from something more like #crystallization than triangulation or consensus.

As a designer who moved from the city to the mountains, I felt human-centered design was missing something. There was a gap between nature and design. My curiosity took me places, I wanted to learn more about this gap in human-centered design and understand why sustainability is still not at the core of most businesses, design and innovation teams. Along the way, I discovered that: - The speed with which we are asked to deliver projects leaves no room for other than human-centered design.  - When the focus is human-centered or client-centered, we lose all context needed for sustainability & regeneration. - Design Leaders and designers lack knowledge about sustainability. - Did design stop being creative? Since 2020, I have worked hard to shift from human-centered to life-centered design and developed a design approach that helps me move from creating value for a single user to creating value for nature, communities, and the economy. This is a professional journey that keeps me entertained for years to come. Some key things I learned so far: - Designing immersed in nature will help you understand the ecosystem you design for in addition to secondary research. - Co-creation is critical to shift from designing for a global user towards designing with a local ecosystem. - With Life-Centered Design, you gain holistic confidence in designing strategies, products, services, and value propositions that benefit all life forms. - Teaching, leading, fostering, advocating, and serving the betterment of all life also benefits an end-user.
