❝Who gives what for what will be fundamental, and not easy with a President who prefers to deal with countries bilaterally, rather than big multilateral institutions; one who doesn’t like equal outcomes where both sides win (and lose) at the same time.❞ 💭 The imminent arrival of Donald Trump in the White House has swung transatlantic relations back to issues of economic policy. So, how can the EU’s economic statecraft adjust and respond to the Trump tariffs, if indeed the incoming President goes ahead with them? The newly-installed European Commission and EU member states must work together in considering a number of steps to anticipate what may be to come. 👇 Find out more in this #CriticalThinking article by Jamie Shea, Senior Fellow for Peace, Security and Defence at Friends of Europe, and former Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges at NATO. #Economy #EconomicStatecraft #InternationalRelations #Trump #EU

Rasmus Sinding Søndergaard and I are organising a panel on the era of defensive democratisation at the BISA US Foreign Policy annual conference hosted at King's College London in September. Please contact me if you are interested in submittting an abstract to this panel. The era of defensive democratisation In recent years, the liberal international order has faced many challenges to its purpose and structure. During the tail-end of the Cold War, development-democratisation at conceptual, articulation, and implementation levels became the go-to for reinforcing this order. The attacks on the US in 2001 heralded a new era where democracy promotion took a particularly aggressive and military form under the Bush administration. That approach faltered, and since then, it has been hard for the US to present a coherent foreign policy message where democratisation continued to be an essential ingredient. The rise of populism, the global democratic recession, and the return of geopolitics has heralded a new era where the narrative of democratisation has become more focused on defending and protecting than exporting democracy. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 consolidated this new path. This panel intends to shed light on this current era of defensive democratisation.

Few days ago, I met Balázs Orbán, Political Director of the Prime Minister's Office Hungary, and engaged in an insightful conversation around his latest book Hussar Cut. His perspectives on Hungary's strategic position within European politics and foreign relations were thought-provoking and provided a valuable understanding of the current geopolitical landscape. Additionally, I had the opportunity to discuss the work of The South Asian Policy Initiative and explore potential synergies in fostering global dialogue. Grateful for the enriching exchange and looking forward to continuing conversations on the importance of strategic collaboration in today’s interconnected world. #Geopolitics #StrategicDialogue #SouthAsianPolicy #GlobalRelations #TheSouthAsianPolicyInitiative

"Following two years of full-scale war with Russia, Ukrainian media outlets are facing significant challenges. On the one hand, they have established close cooperation with numerous international donor organisations, which have become the main source of funding for most Ukrainian newsrooms, especially at the local level. On the other hand, such close and prolonged interaction could not fail to have had an impact." Tetiana Gordiienko of the Media Development Foundation offers insights into the challenging task facing Ukrainian media as they navigate donor dependence, operational challenges, and the urgent need for more sustainable funding models amid the ongoing impact of war.
