It all comes down to money. What are the growing and processing costs? What is a viable selling price? Which species are easiest to grow at sea, have the highest biomass yield and also the lowest processing costs? Working backwards from a commercially viable selling price is essential if seaweed is to establish itself in the wider feed or food market. Maybe processing doesn't need be or can't afford to be too complicated or expensive? Rather than simply focussing on the total protein content, and in order to be competitive and to offer a distinct nutritional advantage, it is also essential to understand and promote the health benefits of functional seaweed carbohydrates as well.

Last month Arla Foods announced they are going to feed their cows a chemical called Bovaer®. Why? To reduce methane emissions by 27%. What’s in Bovaer®? The active ingredient, 3-NOP is a synthetic compound linked to DNA damage, reproductive harm, and endocrine disruption in animal studies. It is also mixed with propylene glycol. Feeding cows synthetic chemicals disrupts the delicate microbial ecosystem in their stomachs. This could lead to health issues, nutrient status and a ripple effect on the quality of milk and meat. This is not about saving the planet. It’s about corporate profits. Some corporations have heavy investments in methane-reduction tech like Bovaer® to squeeze out ethical farmers. Methane is a natural byproduct of a cow’s digestion. This isn’t a flaw. it’s biology. What shall we do? Arla’s milk is actually in supermarkets own brands such as Tesco, Waitrose, Morrisons, etc Stop buying Arla dairy from Tesco, Morrisons, Iceland, Waitrose, M&S, Coop, Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury’s that enable these practices. This milk is also found in Anchor butter and margarine, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Ecomilk, Yeo Valley, Lurpak (butter and margarine), Castello (cheese), Apetina. M&S started using methane reducing supplement in summer 2023. Buy dairy from local pasture raised farms. Choose grass fed and raw wherever possible. We must support farmers who respect nature. This is crazy. The UK Court of Appeal rules that plant-based liquids can’t use the term “milk.” But plant-based liquids have been called “milk” for centuries, if not millennia... Take coconut milk, for example - it’s been a staple in cuisines around the world for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. In fact, the term “coco milk” was first recorded in English as early as 1598....Similarly, almond milk was widely used in Europe during the Middle Ages, particularly in Christian and Islamic cultures, long before the dairy industry we know today even existed! So, why is this an issue now? Let’s get real. This isn’t about clarity or consumer confusion. Consumers are smart enough to know that “oat milk” doesn’t come from cows.. This is about protecting the dairy industry’s market share by restricting the language plant-based brands can use to describe their products. Ironically, in other markets like the US, courts have repeatedly ruled that terms like “almond milk” and “soy milk” aren’t misleading as long as the origin is clearly stated. Even the FDA has acknowledged that it’s common sense - when the source is labeled, consumers understand what they’re buying. The term “milk” isn’t exclusive to animal products. It’s long been used to describe nutrient-rich liquids from various sources - from coconuts to almonds to soybeans. Denying plant-based brands the right to use this term isn’t just illogical - it’s a barrier to progress in shifting toward more sustainable food systems. So I’ll ask again - if “coconut milk” has been fine for centuries, why is “oat milk” suddenly a problem? What are your thoughts? Should plant-based liquids have the right to use the term "milk"? Something to cheer about... 🍺 Brewers' Spent Grain (BSG), the solid residue from malted barley after beer brewing, accounts for approximately 85% of the total waste from beer production, with around 36.4 million tons generated annually worldwide (that's a lot of beer consumption). 🍺 BSG currently has limited use in animal feed and compost applications, with a significant portion being landfilled, contributing to GHG emissions and climate change. And, of course, the loss of valuable material resources. 🍺 Scientists at Nanyang Technological Institute (NTU) in Singapore have developed an innovative method to extract valuable proteins, fit for human consumption, from brewery wastes for beneficial use in plant-based foods and dietary supplements. #climatechange #circulareconomy #brewery #waste #proteins
