In keeping with the additional guidance provided by the Diamond and ESG Guidelines to SAMREC, the SSC recognised that a similar guideline for the reporting of industrial minerals was necessary. Following a year’s deliberation and drawing on information from CIM draft Industrial Minerals Guideline, PERC and CRIRSCO, has now been compiled in support of SAMREC. Even though most South African industrial minerals producers were represented on the committee compiling the Guideline, the SSC nevertheless makes the draft guideline available for public review. If you have any comments, please provide these in writing to Sam Moolla at sam@saimm.co.za before 15 December 2024. SAMCODES SAIMM - The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy

This is an excellent paper highlighting one of the greatest challenges in resource estimation: What's my classification? There's a lot of variability on how this is done project to project, geo to geo. My biggest takeaway: Of 45 surveyed 43-101 reports, 93% relied on geometric methods alone for their classification - as in, solely on search distances, number of closest drillholes, etc. Only 7% used any sort of geostatistics measures such as kriging variance or conditional simulation. This could be due to a perceived lack of data for the stage of the project, but I think a bigger contributer is education. There's not many geology programs that offer courses on geostatistics or resource estimation, and these simple mathematic tools that could offer more insight are seen as a dark art by many working in the field. That was certainly my impression early in my career. What are your thoughts? Is classifying with purely geometric methods a matter of convenience, or are geostatitics just not necessary at many projects?
Hi All, Just to inform you that The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) published my paper on Mineral Resources Classification in July 2024. That is the paper that I presented at SME early this year. Please find the attached published document and the screenshot below. I would highly recommend Mining Industry Owners, Investors, CEOs, Presidents, Mineral Reserve Professionals, Mineral Resource Professionals, Exploration Managers, Mining Engineers, Geologists and all other Mining Professionals to read this publication. If you have any question, please let me know. Thanks. Link: v124n7p371.pdf (saimm.co.za)

A panel discussion at the 13th Mineral Wealth conference on the Topic HARNESSING THE POTENTIAL OF ARTISANAL SCALE MINING IN UGANDA AND THE GREAT LAKES REGION. The Minerals and mining act, 2022 has provided for formalization of the ASMs. Under the regulations, The ASM are allowed to a depth not exceeding 10meters deep. I believe research needs to be done before implementation of this regulation. What is the mineral content at such shallow depth, What is the economic feasibility? What is the Ore grade? After these few questions, and more, it's better to recognize the issues of the ASMs. Other requirements include ESIAs and PSAs . What is your thought?

Mzila Mthenjane, CEO, Minerals Council South Africa, spoke to Sharyn Macnamara of African Mining after a panel discussion he participated in at the Joburg Indaba 2024 on "How do we grow the mining industry? What should we do, can we do?" In part 1 of this video, Mthenjane discusses the context of the current global market demand - including the energy transition and AI trends that require critical minerals - and where South Africa’s strength lies as a potential supplier to this market when it comes to mineral endowment, capability and skills. #MiningMatters #MineralsCouncil #mininginSA #energytransition #AI #joburgindaba #critcalminerals #batterymetals #sustainability

Uzbekistan seeks to expand its mining and mineral sector. On Monday, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed the progress the mining and metallurgical industry has made in the last few years and outlined the plans for 2025. According to the Uzbek government, production in the sector has grown 1.5 times over the past seven years. To continue this development, the Central Asian country aims to attract $1 billion in additional investments next year. However, Mirziyoyev stressed the need for large-scale transformations in production facilities to enhance their competitiveness in global markets. #rawmaterials #mining #criticalminerals #supplychains #centralasia

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫? #TuesdayThoughts I have come to realize that most great leaders that I look up to are servant leaders. They showed up in leadership roles where they volunteered their time to contribute to the mining and minerals industry and in their organizations in search of making a positive impact in the world, from early on in their careers. As young professionals we forget the importance of leading a school society or leading a group project is as equally important as leading a team in a corporate environment or being a CEO. "Practice makes perfect" and yes, the more you practice your leadership skills within your organization and externally, the more chance you having to unleashing the Greatness in you! If Mzila Mthenjane could do it, why can't I? The only limit to our potential is ourselves!
