Promoting the study and advancement of earth sciences since 1895
About us
The Geological Society of South Africa (the GSSA) was established on the 4th of February 1895 and is one of the oldest scientific societies in South Africa. It is a society that exists for geologists and earth scientists with an interest in Africa, and southern Africa in particular, and has over 2 500 members and student members. The GSSA caters for everyone who is eligible for membership regardless of their level of professional development. The GSSA is opposed to any discrimination and a portfolio exists within its Council to transform the Society to one that is truly representative of all the people of southern Africa. GSSA’s members are drawn from professional sectors within academia, government, business and industry. Members are required to comply with the GSSA Code of Ethics, which is aligned with similar international codes to promote ethical and professional conduct of all practitioners. The GSSA aims to stimulate the study of earth sciences and to look after the interests of earth scientists by providing forums and events where geologists and members from related disciplines can meet and share ideas on advances in the science, emerging technology, and new geological models and ideas. These forums include meetings, workshops and conferences. In addition, the Society has a specific division, the Directorate of Professional Programmes (DPP) which organises specialist courses for members and non-members. As a not-for-profit, public benefit association, the GSSA strives to serve the wider public interest as well as the professional membership. Included in these public initiatives is a focus on geoheritage, geotourism and outreach education – issues clearly important to the public at large. The GSSA is governed by its Council, Management Committee (MANCO) and the Executive Office. Queries on earth science topics, membership or the GSSA can be directed to info@gssa.org.za .

In keeping with the additional guidance provided by the Diamond and ESG Guidelines to SAMREC, the SSC recognised that a similar guideline for the reporting of industrial minerals was necessary. Following a year’s deliberation and drawing on information from CIM draft Industrial Minerals Guideline, PERC and CRIRSCO, has now been compiled in support of SAMREC. Even though most South African industrial minerals producers were represented on the committee compiling the Guideline, the SSC nevertheless makes the draft guideline available for public review. If you have any comments, please provide these in writing to Sam Moolla at sam@saimm.co.za before 15 December 2024. SAMCODES SAIMM - The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy

The SAMOG Committee has recently revised the SAMOG Code and issued it for public consultation. All interested and affected parties are invited to review the attached letter and share their feedback. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒓𝒂𝒑𝒆𝒓 𝑴𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒂𝒍 is awarded to recognise an exceptional member of the Geological Profession who, in the spirit of Dr David Draper, has excelled in the advancement of South African Earth Science. This year, the medal was awarded by Chair of the Fellows Committee, Louise Coney, to Prof. Lewis (Lew) David Ashwal, University of the Witwatersrand. Prof Lew Ashwal is an A-rated Geoscientist who has a long history of seminal contributions towards the planetary-scale origin, evolution and significance of igneous rocks throughout Solar System history, focusing on Earth, Moon, Mars and asteroids. He is regarded as a world expert on anorthosites and has published widely on the topic. Prof Ashwal initiated the Large Igneous Provinces project, sponsored by the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust, involving the “next generation” of world experts. Most recently, Prof Ashwal has been part of a consortium that was responsible for putting an International Scientific Drilling Program proposal together to the tune of some US $ 1.5 million to acquire and study 3000 meters of new borehole core in the northern and eastern limbs of the Bushveld Complex. Prof Ashwal is a prolific publisher of academic papers in high-ranking journals, including Nature. He has wide-ranging specialist training and international collaborations that make him a national and international expert in a number of interdisciplinary branches of geosciences. He generously supports his postgraduates and is fundamental to their professional development and capacity building.
