If you do what you did you’ll get what you got. Too often you find yourself being reactive, right? Facing situations that weren’t of your making. Navigating problems created by other people. Dealing with the unwanted things that come your way. You feel bound by your role. Held back by your boss. Trapped within systems and processes that simply aren’t fit for purpose. Or else you fear speaking up. Being seen as “difficult”. Making a mistake. But here’s the thing: If you do what you did you’ll get what you got. Do the opposite of what feels right. Because what feels right is really what feels familiar. And you will attract and be drawn to the very things you don’t want any more. This time will not be different Unless you do something different. Change begins with intention. Make a choice. Become proactive. Set a new intention. Start today. And see things change tomorrow. - For more on speaking, acting and living with intention, join 399 arts professionals just like you who subscribe to my monthly newsletter (link in bio). #theatre #coaching #leadership

Searching for fulfilment? Look no further. Here’s the combined wisdom of my 43 years on this planet in four bullet points and a quote. 1. Know yourself Understand who you are, where you came from, why you think and act the way you do. 2. Accept yourself Accept what you find staring back at you in the mirror. 3. Like yourself Not too much: not too little. Like what you are. 4. Serve others Use what you have and who you are to be of service. In other words: The meaning of life is to find out what your gift is. The purpose of life is to give it away. Or as the great Dolly Parton put it: “Find out who you are and do it on purpose”. - Want to hear more about the power of purpose? How my client achieved the important stuff (and not just the urgent stuff). My client was ambitious. They were motivated, productive and highly respected. And yet they came to me feeling overworked and underachieving. Six sessions later, they were starting each week with a newfound sense of purpose. Accountability Coaching was the weekly shot of motivation, clarity and willpower they were looking for. Now it’s your turn. You’ll become clear about what matters most. You’ll prioritise what you can control over what you can’t. You’ll see immediate progress on your most important priorities. ‘George’s insight into the industry combined with his techniques for increasing productivity and approach to attaining personal goals was highly valuable.’ -Kat Pegler, Artist & Creative Producer Ready to be rid of the Monday dread? We can do anything but not everything. If we trust tenacity will come later, then choosing what to do is the hard part. Beginning with the end in mind means saying no to everything except that which is most important to you. And figuring out what’s most important to you can be a life’s work. But I reckon it’s worth figuring that out and making those choices sooner or later. And it’s generally better to start sooner, rather than later. And later rather than never. - Like this? 🌟 Recently returned from an inspiring West Region Leadership Retreat! 🌟 One highlight was when our SVP Joshua Smith posed a thought-provoking question: "When reflecting on your life, what song encapsulates it best?" 🎶 After some reflection, I chose "Hall of Fame" by The Script ft will.i.am. Here's why: 💪 Overcoming Obstacles: Throughout my journey, I've encountered numerous challenges, and I'm certain more lie ahead. But each obstacle has only strengthened my resolve. 🏆 Pursuit of Excellence: Striving for greatness is a constant pursuit, even if perfection remains elusive. The journey itself is where growth happens. 🌍 Leaving a Legacy: Leaving a positive mark on the world is a personal mission of mine. I aspire to be remembered for the impact I've had on others, be it through family, work, relationships, or inspiration. 🎵 Motivational Lyrics: The lyrics of "Hall of Fame" resonate deeply with me, serving as a reminder to persevere, maintain focus, and never lose sight of my goals. I've included a link to the song & video for you to enjoy. Whether it's your first time hearing it or not, I encourage you to take a moment, listen, close your eyes and really just listen. Then listen again, this time watching the video. 😉 What song best describes your journey? I'd love to hear your thoughts. 🎶 Share with #MyJourneySong. Can't wait to hear your picks! ✨ #PersonalGrowth #Inspiration #SuccessMindset https://lnkd.in/ghH2XsCD

Being the Executive Director is tough and requires a special blend of skills and character traits. In our online support groups (ie ED Happy Hour), we've been snarkily referring to ourselves as unicorns since before the laugh/cry emoji existed. 🦄😂 This article outlines a few reasons why it's especially difficult for EDs in the arts right now, and especially in dance: 1️⃣ Generating revenue, primarily fundraising and ticket sales, is as hard as it's ever been. 2️⃣ Generational change is impacting audience behaviors and staff succession. 3️⃣ A successful ED must have business acumen, the ability to fundraise, and a bunch of other skills... but the salary rarely matches the qualifications. I was fortunate to go through the 2-year AIM program with the DeVos Institute of Arts Management and Michael Kaiser, who is quoted in the article, while serving as the Executive Director of Invertigo Dance Theatre. That was in the before-times, but the three pillars still hold true: artistic boldness, institutional marketing, and creating a sense of belonging. I went to a dance show this weekend that embodied these practices. I sat with three other unicorns in the back row. 🦄🦄🦄🦄 When the program director made a bold, impromptu fundraising ask during the welcome address, all four of us erupted in applause and cheers. The arts leaders exist. They may be magical, but they are real. If we, as a society and field, can manage to provide succession planning, leadership training, and adequate funding, we might just be able to keep them from going extinct. #artsleadership #artsmanagement #executivedirector #dance #artsfunding

Resilience Last night, my daughter (who is in a theater appreciation class) and I enjoyed a performance of "A Christmas Carol" at her high school. It was opening night. There were several folks there, and I expecte there will be many more for the performances today and tomorrow. Opening night can be tough. Everyone is a bit on edge. Everyone has rehearsed and prepared but now the time has come for the rubber to meet the road: it's the first big performance. And, so, remembering my own performances, I go in understanding this. The props and sets were gorgeous and were crafted by the students themselves who were also directed by other students. It was very impressive. The acting and the singing were on point, as were most of the accents and mannerisms. Indeed, it was all impressive even with a few technical difficulties and set change collisions they experienced during scene changes. But even with a pretty dramatic collision that held the audience fast, wondering whether the entire descending backdrop would come crashing down, the performers went on as if nothing at all had happened. They abided their roles, and continued to give stunning vocal and acting performances regardless of the things going on around them. Resilience, as I define it, is the ability to continue pressing forward regardless of circumstance. It's a learned skill for many, I'd wager. But it is an essential skills to hone. It is, as far as I can tell, the drive to disregard failure as ultimate. Today is a good day for reflection. What has hindered you? What mistakes have you made this past week from which you believe you'll never recover? What has knocked you down? What has fallen apart around you unexpectedly, leading you to believe it cannot be rebuilt? Today is a good day to move forward. Today is a good day to learn and practice resilience. #employees #leadership #leaders #artists #creatives #teambuilding #business #skills
