How likely are you to experience an earthquake? The latest update to the National Seismic Hazard Assessment sheds new light on the areas of Australia most likely to experience an earthquake. This is the first update to the national assessment since 2018 and we’ve identified Darwin and the eastern highlands of Victoria as areas where there is a higher risk of strong ground shaking. As our senior seismologist Dr Trevor Allen explains, this doesn’t mean that there are more earthquakes or that our earthquakes are getting stronger. It means that we’ve got a better understanding of the risks that are associated with earthquakes. Press play to watch the video now, then read more here: https://bit.ly/3P0duuE

The latest update to the National Seismic Hazard Assessment offers valuable insights into the likelihood of earthquakes across Australia. Notably, areas like Darwin and the eastern highlands of Victoria have been identified as regions with a higher risk of strong ground shaking. This update enhances our understanding of seismic risks, although it does not indicate an increase in earthquake frequency or intensity. It's a great example of how advancements in data and research allow us to better understand and prepare for natural events. 🔗 Watch the video and learn more about this important update! #Seismology #EarthquakeRisk #GeoscienceAustralia #NaturalDisasters #RiskAssessment

A M6.2 earthquake shook Costa Rica yesterday, NW of the Nicoya Peninsula. This is a classic locality in earthquake science, where slip on the megathrust is a patchwork of fast earthquakes and slower, silent slip. How does this quake fit in? Read more on our blog. https://lnkd.in/gE_jJDa7

A magnitude-3.2 earthquake was recorded some 18 kilometres south of Kalkfeld in the Otjozondjupa Region on Sunday afternoon at around 16:31. No loss of life or property was reported due to the earthquake. The Ministry of Mines and Energy says the earthquake hit at a shallow depth of less than 10 kilometres, meaning that the event could be felt but is not expected to cause any significant damage. The event was recorded by four seismic stations from the Namibian Seismological Network at Karibib, Windhoek, Kamanjab, and Tsumeb. Precautionary measures one can take in case of an earthquake are: if you find yourselves indoors, go outside safely when possible, or else find refuge under a table; if outdoors, find a clear spot clear of buildings, trees, and powerlines; stay and face away from windows; and watch out for falling objects. #NBCNews #nbcdigitalnews #nbcDSTV282 #nbcGOtv20 #nbcPlusApp

With the recent 4.8 magnitude earthquake in the NY Tri-state area, it's important to be aware of the increasing earthquake risk on the US East Coast. The U.S. Geological Survey released the 2023 National Seismic Hazard Map earlier this year, highlighting the potential financial impact of earthquakes. Megan Linkin discusses the importance of learning from past events and preparing for future natural hazards in this video: https://ow.ly/tCSX30sBsZN #natcat #earthquake.

⚠The record number of earthquakes with a magnitude above 5 in different regions of the planet this century occurred on April 5-6 The earthquake cycle started on April 3 with a powerful earthquake in Taiwan (https://lnkd.in/d53i_9-U). The strongest earthquakes of these record days: ✔️Mariana Islands (https://lnkd.in/dJuMQezw M6.8 ✔️The border of Myanmar, India and Bangladesh is the M5.8 ✔️Tonga - M5.6 At the same time, seismologists pay attention to a series of earthquakes along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where three earthquakes stood out: M 5.3, 4.9 and 5.2 The public focused on the earthquake (https://lnkd.in/dyPPj6-t the vicinity of New York City, where several more earthquakes took place on April 5, the strongest of which was M4. In addition, 7 earthquakes, including a magnitude of 4.4, occurred in Northern California. ♾In a series of Global Crisis forums , we have repeatedly said that the number of earthquakes will increase and the Mariana Trench is a serious threat (https://lnkd.in/dV88jzN2) where is the thinnest oceanic crust. The strongest earthquake ever recorded was the 1960 Valdivia Earthquake in Chile, with a magnitude of 9.5, causing significant damage and triggering tsunamis across the Pacific. Other major earthquakes include the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake, the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake, the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, and the 1952 Kamchatka Earthquake, all of which reached magnitudes of 9.0 or higher. https://lnkd.in/gSC3Dsfg

Reporting: Earthquake number 10 prediction confirmed and documented: Earthquake happened: M 5.1 - southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge Time: 2024-07-09 06:08:40 (UTC+02:00) Location: 27.682°S 13.425°W Depth 10 km Confirmation video: https://lnkd.in/gGtkhm6N Prediction video nr 1 (11 days ago - system spotted) - almost perfect spot location: https://lnkd.in/gBcNaGqg Prediction video nr 2 (5 days ago - taking a bit the system) - perfect spot location marking: https://lnkd.in/geJpDPDt These are the only spots that my model was spotting in this region at that time - and the location predicted is perfect. Timing - it looks like there are factors disturbing - like other earthquakes prevent the system from reorganizing fully or even possibly human activity - and I can't just observe one system all the time as one person - it's too much data for one person. However - it shows that there is a clear window for delaying earthquakes by preventing the self-organization of neural weather pressure systems.
