Empowering Skilled Migrants in Australia's Job Market In Australia, a nation built on the contributions of migrants, the journey to employment for skilled newcomers can be a challenging one. Despite being a land of opportunity, many face barriers in securing their first job. Migrants make up a significant portion of Australia's workforce, with approximately 30% of the population being born overseas. However, despite their vital role, the unemployment rate among migrants is way higher than the national average. Let's dive into the issue and explore how we can bridge the gap: Unemployment Statistics- Recent data reveals that while Australia boasts a relatively low national unemployment rate at 3.7%, the rate among migrants is notably higher, hovering at about 8%. This disparity highlights the unique challenges that skilled migrants face in accessing employment opportunities. South West Local Jobs are celebrating International Migrants Day, and the migrants that work within our local South West Community. Migrants play an important and valued role in the employment landscape, particularly in addressing skills shortages. According to an article by the Australian Industry Group, migrants account for a 21.5% share of the employed workforce in WA, which has been deemed an attractive destination due to its strong mining sector. Occupational outcomes for migrants in Australia vary depending on skill level, visa category, language proficiency, and the recognition of overseas qualifications, shaping the types of job roles migrants secure. Australia has long been a top choice for skilled migrants. Businesses and states are actively recruiting talent from overseas. But, a CEDA report shows that nearly a quarter of these skilled migrants work in jobs beneath their qualifications. This mismatch means they’re often feeling undervalued, unfulfilled, and even facing discrimination—all of which can take a toll on their mental and emotional well-being. It also results in a significant economic loss, with an estimated $1.25 billion lost in potential wages. The reality is that bringing skilled migrants here is just the first step. How can we help them thrive and make the most of their talents? #PersonnelRelocations #MakeTheRightStart #InternationalAssignee #EmployeeRelocation #MoveToAustralia #MigrateToAustralia #RelocationSpecialist #RelocationAssistance #RelocationTips #Australia #GlobalMobility

With the current economic environment, it is getting more difficult for migrants to get jobs. I shared my thoughts with Duoya Lu, a journalist from RNZ who was doing a story on the plight of migrants in the current job environment. My feedback was that the government needs to invest now in upskilling & training old & new migrants, so they can get productively engaged with the market. The competition will be tougher, with so many Kiwis, themselves unemployed right now. Stats NZ revealed today that in the year ended March 2024, there was a net migration loss of 52,500 New Zealand citizens, this is the first time the annual net migration loss of New Zealand citizens has exceeded 50,000. The economy needs fixing - soon. https://lnkd.in/gcd-PyFS Migrant Careers Support Trust Indian Weekender

"most European countries are failing to provide good job opportunities for highly educated migrants, at a potentially significant cost to their labour forces and economies." ["brain waste"] "Success stories for highly educated migrants like Santos are more common in Portugal than elsewhere on the continent. The investigation found that in western Europe’s poorest country, college-educated migrants are less likely to find themselves overqualified, underemployed or unemployed than across Europe as a whole." "There is also much greater parity between migrant and native graduates in Portugal than the rest of southern Europe. The most common jobs among migrants with degrees in Portugal mirror that of native graduates, with teaching, nursing, engineering and finance roles topping the lists. This is in stark contrast with Spain, Italy and Greece where migrant graduates are far more likely to be found working as cleaners and cashiers." "Portugal also stands out as a promising destination for migrants with technical degrees. Compared with the rest of southern Europe, migrants with degrees in science, computing and maths have a much greater chance of working in a job suitable for their qualifications and at a rate that is comparable with native graduates." "“Portugal knows how to make the most of its highly skilled migrant population and its focus on the tech industry and entrepreneurship has been an important part of its economic recovery since the financial crisis. These are sectors with flexible job markets that can accommodate highly skilled people with diverse qualifications and backgrounds,” Yilmaz adds that supportive policies have further created an atmosphere where “NGOs and civil society organisations are proactive and create lots of networking opportunities for migrants — there’s a very visible start-up scene, especially in Lisbon.”" "A significant factor has been the Portuguese government’s recognition of the benefits that migrant workers bring to the economy, Yilmaz says, and national policies that support them, from free language training to mentoring programmes and courses in entrepreneurship." "Despite the recent rise of the far-right Chega party, immigrants working in Portugal face less hostility than they might elsewhere on the continent. An EU-wide survey in 2021 found that 73 per cent of Portuguese people felt that the integration of immigrants in their local area was successful, well above the EU average of 42 per cent." "Portugal’s relative success in harnessing the skills of its educated migrants appears to have inspired some of the EU’s current strategy for migrant integration, which has made easier recognition of qualifications a priority, along with supporting entrepreneurship." --- #economics #demography #labourmarket #qualifications #migration #portugal #hospitality

It is time for better directives and policies on the recognition of qualifications and access to labour with dignity. The inclusion of skills from diverse backgrounds only brings enrichment and the bettering of services in all fields. Very insightful report that highlights the short-comings of many European states when it comes to providing social and labour integration for skilled migrants.
The ‘brain waste’ of skilled migrants in Europe. A new investigation shows how countries hold back educated people from overseas from working in their fields of training..... write up by Ella Hollowood, Justin-Casimir Braun & Jude Webber in Financial Times. Livia Umbelino, 32, trained as a social worker in her native Rio de Janeiro, learning the methods, skills and responsibilities of supporting and improving people’s lives. But after emigrating to Ireland five years ago, she is still unable to work in the job she trained for, as her qualifications are not recognised by local officials. Umbelino’s experience is typical of the many migrant graduates in Europe suffering from a phenomenon often referred to as “brain waste”: either finding themselves overqualified for their new jobs, working fewer hours than they would like or, for some, spending time unemployed. A joint investigation led by Lighthouse Reports with the Financial Times, El Pais and Unbias The News shows that most European countries are failing to provide good job opportunities for highly educated migrants, at a potentially significant cost to their labour forces and economies. read more below: Financial Times #education #braindrain #immigration #talentstrategy #europeanpolicy #skilledmigrants #skillsdeployment #skillsdevelopment

The full potential of the existing #migrant talent pool in #Australia to solve the acute shortage of skilled workers remains untapped by many employers. This presents an opportunity for employers to make better use of these skills. At The Migration Agency we empower employers to understand how to recruit international candidates, and how international skills can translate into Australia for both work and #immigration purposes. We also educate leaders and HR teams on cross-cultural hiring, to understand how they can tap into this talent pool and give migrant workers the best chance of success to onboard and thrive in their new workplace. #diversity #dignityatwork #skillsshortage #smartimmigration #globaltalent
🤯“We found that on average, migrants who have been in Australia for two to six years earn more than 10 per cent less than otherwise similar Australian-born workers.” Finding was shared in an article published by The Committee of Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) and their graduate economist Sebastian Tofts-Len and Senior Economist Andrew Barker. The common barriers migrant workers face are: 🚧 Lack of recognition of their international qualifications 🚧 Subtle discrimination in favor of locally educated individuals 🚨Australia is currently experiencing an acute shortage of skilled workers, with low unemployment rates, yet the full potential of the existing migrant workforce remains untapped by many employers. This presents an opportunity for employers to make better use of these skills. Proposed solutions that stand out include: ✅ Ensuring international qualifications are recognised by employers. This is a core part of our “Talent Mapping” service at TMA, where we assist employers in understanding how international skills are recognised in Australia for both work and immigration purposes. ✅ Implementing cross cultural awareness programs to help hiring managers and talent acquisition teams in supporting migrant workers to gain local experience, onboard and settle into their new workplace and community. Skilled migrants are crucial to Australia’s economy, especially in industries facing critical skill shortages. The RDA Orana DAMA is a five-year, employer-sponsored visa program that helps local employers in the Orana region bring in highly skilled overseas workers to meet these needs. This agreement isn’t about replacing local jobs but supplementing the workforce where there are gaps. While training and education are vital, they often take time. Temporary skilled migrants can provide immediate, high-quality expertise, helping businesses thrive. Did you know? ➡️ 81.2% of permanent skilled migrants over the age of 15 are employed, compared to 61.5% of the broader Australian population. ➡️ Of the 3 million permanent migrants who have arrived in Australia since 2000, 59% came via the skilled stream. The RDA Orana DAMA ensures that local employers can access the skills they need, bringing valuable perspectives and expertise to the region. #RDADAMA #SkilledMigrants #OranaRegion #EconomicGrowth #WorkforceDevelopment
