I found Ezra Klein's interview with Hannah Ritchie really thought provoking. Both are self-proclaimed "techno-optimists" who think that meaningful action to mitigate climate change will depend on having viable, agreeable substitutions for the things people want and are accustomed to having--energy, vehicles, meat, etc.--no real behavior change--or god forbid, sacrifice--required. For this reason they are more optimistic about the rapid uptake of renewable energy and less so about en masse shifts in diet (more plants; fewer cows) that could help address the biodiversity crisis. All the more reason to push for policy that well help advance these substitutions. Which depends on electing the right policymakers with the mandate to do so. 🌱 Do governments view nature-based solutions as optional extras or as a necessity? The Wildlife Trusts' Kathryn Brown makes a good point in this story by Cecilia Keating 👇 : "Nature-based solutions are now nature-based necessities, and we must all embrace the role that nature can play in enabling landscapes to adapt." It got me reflecting on the language we use. The term "solutions" may unintentionally suggest that these measures are optional rather than essential components for our survival. The NBS term will continue to be embedded into global political discussions and climate action, and we must avoid confusing the discussions by altering established terms. But using language that conveys the urgency and the imperative need to prioritise nature is so important. #naturebasedsolutions #NBS #climateaction

Today is World Environment Day. Created by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1973 to highlight critical environmental challenges, this event brings together tens of millions of people across 150 countries to enact positive environmental change. This year’s focus is land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. Up to 40% of land across the planet is now classified as degraded, which directly affects half the world’s population. When coupled with a 29% increase in droughts since 2000, this indicates urgent action is needed. Land conservation is a cost-effective, high-impact solution to climate change. It can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve public health, among many other co-benefits. As Abigail Weinberg, Senior Director of Conservation Science & Planning at the Open Space Institute, states, “The report elevates land conservation to its rightful place as a critical climate solution and calls the entire conservation community to action.
