Promoting Respectful Language & Etiquette 🌟 July is the perfect time to celebrate the diverse abilities of individuals and promote inclusivity - It's Celebrate Disability Pride Month! Let's ensure we use respectful language and practice proper etiquette: #1 - Use Person-First Language: Say "person (name) with ... (disability)" instead of "disabled person" OR ask them what they prefer! #2 -Avoid Offensive Terms: Refrain from using terms like "handicapped," "crippled," or "retarded." #3 - Respect Personal Space: Don't touch a person's wheelchair or assistive devices without asking for permission. #4 - Ask Before Assisting: Offer help, but wait for acceptance or instructions. #5 - Listen and Learn: Take the time to listen to people with disabilities and learn from their experiences. Let's make our community more inclusive and respectful! ♿️ There is so much more shared on our blog: celebrate-disability-pride-month-july-with-gigis-playhouse-milwaukee #themoreyouknow #disabilitypride #gigisplayhouse #gigisplayhouseMKE

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, a day that highlights the importance of supporting the over 1 billion people worldwide with disabilities. Beyond my personal commitment to accessibility, I’ve learned so much serving as the Co-Chair of the Disability:IN CMO & CCO coalition, and I’m so excited that this group of leaders is growing to include 17 member companies (welcome!). These companies have come together to launch a new resource library to help everyone working in marketing and communications advance disability inclusion. #GAAD serves as a reminder that we have the power to break down barriers and create a more inclusive world. We can help by creating more accessible content for all. Today is Human Rights Day, with the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” highlighting the universal need for human rights. For persons living with disabilities, the workplace can be a battleground of stereotypes like, from being seen as helpless to being given a pity party. These barriers not only restrict opportunities but also deny them the dignity and respect they deserve. Disability doesn’t mean inability. We need to challenge these perceptions by creating inclusive workplaces that recognize abilities, not just disabilities. How are you promoting respect and inclusion in your professional space? #HumanRightsDay #InclusionMatters #DisabilityRights #AccessibilityForAll

Today is #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay (#GAAD). It’s important to remember that knowing about accessibility issues is just the first step. We need to actually DO something to make our workplaces, platforms, content, services better for everyone, no matter their abilities. Let’s make sure we’re not just talking about change, but making it happen. I love this #CMO and #CCO coalition that Jill Kramer posts about below. 👇 It’s a wonderful example of ACTION. Let’s create a world where everyone is represented and included. #GAAD #Inclusion #Accessibility 💜 Disability:IN Jill Houghton

In today's business landscape, fostering an inclusive environment for people with disabilities isn't just the right thing to do, it's a strategic advantage. Including people with disabilities doesn't end with meeting the accessibility needs of those disabilities, it comes down to treating them similar to how you treat your non-disabled employees. This is known as #normalisation. Want to know more about disability and the process of inclusion? July is Disability Pride Month, a time to recognise and reflect on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in the workplace. Many of these challenges are hidden, from physical accessibility issues to biases that affect career advancement or even basic access to systems or spaces. Despite progress, there are still numerous barriers that need to be addressed and progress isn’t coming fast enough. Creating an inclusive and accessible work environment is essential for supporting colleagues with disabilities and ensuring equal opportunities for all where disability and inclusion specialists or teams act as SME and not lead the topic in separation. Covering the basics would be to start mixing sympathy with empathy as there’s too much of the former and not enough of the latter. #DisabilityPrideMonth #Inclusion #Accessibility #WorkplaceEquality

Hiring people with disabilities isn't just about optics, it's about recognizing the value and contributions that every individual brings to the table. As Empish JeAnne Thomas says, "We can contribute just like an able-bodied person can." This speaks volumes in ways many don't fully realize. As we close up National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), we celebrate the impact of inclusive hiring practices on individuals with disabilities and organizations that benefit from diverse perspectives and talent. Let's continue driving change and creating workplaces where everyone can thrive. Check out this powerful snippet from Empish Thomas and learn more about the incredible AudioEye A11iance Community at https://lnkd.in/ew7z2tUP. Video Description: Text bubble with an audiogram of Empish Thomas speaking. Transcript: It shows, you know, outwardly facing the optics look good when you hire people with disabilities because our population is growing and we can contribute just like an abled-bodied person. That speaks volumes to people in ways you just don't even know or understand. #NDEAM #Inclusion #DisabilityEmployment #Accessibility #DiversityAndInclusion #HR #DEIA

#accessibility check-ins are a great idea for practicing what most organizations preach. I hope this practice catches hold! I know I plan to add this to my sessions ☺️.
How can leaders foster an accessible culture? Making time for access check-ins is one way to start, suggests disability rights activist and author Emily Ladau, who joined the #GetHired podcast to kick off National Disability Employment Awareness Month (#NDEAM). “When you are gathering a group of people, you stop for a moment and you say, ‘We're checking in on accessibility,’” says Ladau. “‘Is there something that we can do in this moment to make it more accessible for you?’” What is your company doing to maximize accessibility? Tell us in the comments.
