GLG’s Alma Sierra began dancing when she was 8 years old. First ballet, then jazz, modern, West African, and Broadway. She loved it – the choreography, the discipline, the community – and she was good at it, too. Performing came naturally to her, so she kept at it. 🩰 But after living in Austin, TX for a few years, she felt something was missing. She was a long way from where she had grown up in El Paso. Despite being in the same state, the two cities have distinctly different cultures. El Paso is a sprawling border town with its own customs and traditions and a clear Mexican-American identity. It’s a way of life, and it was hard to find in Austin. So 3 years ago, she took a chance and tried out for the renowned Ballet Folklórico de Austin, a group that performs traditional Mexican folk dance, and is based in Central Texas. For her, it was a chance to reconnect with her roots and feel closer to the community and culture that raised her – all while doing what she loves most. Today, as a GLG Research Manager, she spends her days working with some of the world’s largest biotech and pharma companies. Her evenings are a bit different. Ballet Folklórico is demanding. For 3-4 nights a week, Alma and her fellow dancers get together to practice and perfect the routines passed down from generations before them. Rehearsals can go well into the night, especially when preparing for national competitions, alongside award-winning Latin artists. All the costumes are museum quality, handpicked, and sourced from local artisans in Oaxaca. “It's important to remain true to the community we're representing," Alma told us. GLG Austin welcomed company leaders and members of the Board of Directors, including co-founder Thomas Lehrman, for a fireside chat and Q&A with GLGers in the office. Thomas spoke about GLG's founding in 1998 and why he’s never been more excited about the company, 26 years in. "The opportunity ahead of us is just so large." 🚙🔌 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝗩 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴? People buy electric vehicles for two reasons: the eco-conscious case and the business case. The problem for EV sales is that, at the moment, there isn’t a valid business case. From charging costs to vehicle costs, to the pace of tech innovation putting heavy pressure on secondary markets to sell old models, it’s hard to make EVs make sense in many consumers’ budgets, especially in Europe. Add on anxieties about range and cold weather, as well as new questions about how eco-friendly EVs really are, it’s no surprise that sales have faltered. The markets leading EV penetration are those where governments have intervened. In Norway or Hong Kong, for example, EVs made up most new vehicle registrations last year thanks to enticing tax incentives, including for businesses. If we’re going to see a large-scale transition to EVs anytime soon, governments will need to play an active role. ♻️🔋 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗩𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝘀? The sustainability and eco-friendliness of battery electric vehicles has come more into question. There have been reports on the consequences of raw material production – e.g., water consumption for cobalt production – and questions around what really qualifies as clean energy, which varies country to country. Work is still being done to figure out how to create a recycling program for EV batteries at scale. For electric cars to have an impact on our environment, the speed of development and adoption must increase rapidly. We also need to generate energy in a sustainable way, otherwise the only benefit is the improved air quality in urban areas. Locally, emission free driving can make a city more livable. As for hybrids, they give the customer peace of mind that they will arrive at their destination without the typical range anxiety. But there are limited benefits of having two engines in one car at the same time. Ultimately, I don’t see hybrids as an end game, but rather an interim solution for a lower barrier of entry to EV driving. 👤 Sebastian Miller is the former CEO of Mercedes-Benz Charging Solutions in Stuttgart, Germany and a GLG expert.

“Anybody can read an annual report or listen to an earnings call,” said GLG expert Albert Vita, former Director of Strategy and Innovation at The Home Depot. A retail strategist who has worked with some of the biggest brands in the world, including Walmart, Target, Nike, and eBay. We asked where he comes in and why GLG stands out amongst its peers. "I really enjoy the intellectual challenge," he told us, being able to adapt to client needs on the fly. “Most of the time it doesn't feel like work.”

When Claire Keenan joined GLG in the fall of 2013, she had no idea where the role would take her. From interacting with experts she never otherwise would have, to partnering with enterprise clients all across Europe, she's held nearly every position at GLG over the past 11 years. How does the Head of Immunology at a global biopharma leader keep pace with innovation? Peers, partners, and mentors, according to Lucian Ionescu, a community of professionals and practitioners introduced to him through the GLG Institute. "It's not your traditional executive coaching,” he said, on being able to tap into specific experts on demand. “You have access to a group of people that have done it. Gone through the same challenges with a lot of sweat and a lot of struggle,” Lucian told us. “And they made it. And now you [can] learn a lot from them, what worked and what didn’t, in a non-competitive way.”
