Great to join this insightful conversation today guided by Veronica Vukasovic Montt. Some of my key messages: - The high levels of electricity from renewable resources in Latin America (double the global average) means it has a unique potential to produce low carbon hydrogen and to use this to decarbonise whilst building new supply chains, increasing trade, and forging and strengthening bilateral relationships with key global players. However, projects in the region face significant and specific challenges to reaching FID. - To realise its potential, in the near term the region should focus on local demand creation measures, and on reducing the high cost of capital for low carbon hydrogen projects in order to attract investment. On the latter point, CORFO | Chilean Economic Development Agency's $1bn financing facility under development in Chile is a good example of an innovative approach to do so. The first of it's kind, the facility will be built with financing from various multilateral development banks and aims to de-risk/reduce the cost of capital for green hydrogen projects in Chile. It was interesting to hear Nabil Katabi views on the benefits of starting small in the region given financing and infrastructure constraints, and Alexis Xavier Rodríguez's reflections on how we close the cost gap to make hydrogen competative. I look forward to continuing the conversation at World Hydrogen Latin America in Santiago in December!

Of Myths and Molecules: Getting Real about Green Hydrogen Diplomacy In recent years, green hydrogen has emerged as one of the most promising clean technologies, often portrayed as the ‘Swiss knife’ of the energy transition, suggests Lukas Trakimavičius of the European Union Institute for Security Studies. In the EU and elsewhere, green hydrogen has been increasingly seen as an instrument of diplomacy. Despite being the most abundant element on earth, hydrogen mostly exists in molecules bound to other elements, requiring extraction at a significant cost in energy. In the future, green hydrogen will play an important, albeit limited, role in the energy transition. A more tech-savvy hydrogen diplomacy approach should focus on hydrogen derivatives and collaboration across the green hydrogen economy. To build successful green hydrogen partnerships, a realistic approach is essential, starting with a firm grasp of the fundamentals of how to produce, transport and consume this fuel. https://lnkd.in/dwSSeCei

In the past two days, I had the chance to meet a couple of stakeholders from the public and private sector in Rome, thanks to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Here are my impressions: 1) #Italy is increasingly willing to engage more with the #EU institutions as well as at global level (as seen with this year’s G7 talks). It goes without saying, Italians have been producing some of the best pieces of advices about where the EU should land in the coming years. What is common in the #Draghi report, #Letta report but also in the #Mattei report is to make the EU a stronger soft power globally. 2) Italy is full of energy and potential with an economy driven by a powerful SMEs ecosystem as well as by family businesses. But it is becoming increasingly difficult for many of them to scale up their activities in Europe mainly due to its fragmentation. 3) It’s quite amazing how much Italy has challenged to move from 40% gas dependency on Russia to almost zero in about two years. The recipe has been a combination of supply diversion, renewable investment, and efficiency. It shows that Italy and Europe can act fast when needed. 4) The triple imperative of combining economic growth, decarbonization and electrification seems to be the North Star here. Grids and renewable development are key. Investing in future breakthrough technologies such as #CCS and #SMR, too. We need pragmatism as highlighted by a number of people we’ve met. GE Vernova is committed to support the energy transition in Italy. Thanks so much to Tim Bradley, Marjorie Chorlins, Ivana Zuzul for the great organisation. Great honour to meet Ambassador Jack Markell, Simone Vellucci, alessandro noce, Gianni Riotta, Senator Giulio Terzi among others #GEVernova #Electrify #Decarbonise #EnergyTransition #TheEnergyToChangeTheWorld
