The influence of racially biased policies still permeates through our food access systems, and we can see its presence through analysis of health outcomes. One of the things I'm often asked is "how is it possible that a system is racist, when our country is not a racist one?" My response: just look at the numbers. When assessing outcome metrics disaggregated by race and the data demonstrates a drastic difference between groups, it is a clear indicator that racism is still embedded into the causal systems of those outcomes. It is not simply enough for us to create policy and systems that remove race from the equation moving forward, we need to reverse the harmful impact of the past through corrective equitable policy implementation. We've got a lot of work to do but are fully capable of creating a truly just and equitable food landscape for all.
“We hope holding the U.S. accountable on an international stage for human right to food violations will underscore the need for coordinated food and farm policy that is rooted in the experience of small-scale food producers and those with lived experience of hunger in the U.S.,” said Alison Cohen, the National Right to Food Community of Practice Director and General Coordinator. “In the meantime, the National Right to Food Community of Practice and partners will continue advocating for the implementation of a human rights framework at the local, state, and national levels when addressing issues in the food system.” https://lnkd.in/ere3vXb4 R. Note carefully the words at the end of the quoted passage. Consider the implications of a jurist who sees their role as something other than seeing the laws are correctly applied to a set of presented facts. Consider the implications of a jurist who rules based on his or her perception of the “needs of modern society”. ***** Readers who want a fuller exploration of the longstanding social and political tension that arises from depending on experts can turn to “Democracy and Truth” by historian Sophia Rosenfeld. Or readers may choose a new volume by Stephen Breyer. The recently retired justice is an expert on administrative law and helped Sen. Ted Kennedy deregulate the airline industry. His “Reading the Constitution: Why I Chose Pragmatism, Not Textualism” thoughtfully weighs the difficulty of balancing fealty to the Constitution with the needs of modern society. ***** https://lnkd.in/eZJhySea Who deputized judges to decree the needs of modern society? Who declared judges to be the institutional experts in what society “needs”? We have legislative bodies at every level of government which are supposed to address society's “needs”. We have judges to apply the laws those bodies enact to the cases brought before them, so that people may obtain a modicum of redress for a particular grievance. That redress is what the courts are able to offer up as “justice”. If the Constitution is not meeting a particular need, people should campaign to amend it accordingly. That the process is arduous and time consuming is not a valid reason for bypassing the Constitutional order; the process was made arduous and time consuming specifically to prevent frivolous amendments that could not stand the test of time. We would do well to acknowledge a fundamental truth, that government is at best a necessary evil, and that it is generally more evil than necessary. We would do even better to demand that legislators and judges acknowledge it as well, and discharge their duties accordingly.

This ad by Pacific Wild in Canada, featuring William Shatner, is gaining attention for its clever and humorous approach towards environmental advocacy. While some may find the ad's language crude, it's undeniably clever ( be warned before you click, it is NSFW). To evaluate its true effectiveness, I have additional questions: 1) What percentage of ad clicks led to actions taken? 2) How does this conversion rate compare to other campaigns? 3) Is there a strategy to retain and engage respondents further - and over time are these respondents more or less committed than people recruited another way? 4) Does allowing non-constituent messages to lawmakers work in Canada? It's a no-no in the US. 5) How might the strident message to lawmakers be received, and could it potentially backfire? Measuring the impact of an advocacy campaign goes beyond the ad itself. Today is Anti-Slavery Day✊ A staggering 50 million people live in #ModernSlavery worldwide, and roughly a quarter are children. This pervasive problem is all around us, often hidden in plain sight. People face risks of modern slavery making our clothes, picking our crops, working in factories, restaurants, carwashes and even homes. This week, the UK House of Lords Modern Slavery Act 2015 Committee published its report aimed at providing post-legislative scrutiny on the Act and recommendations on the changes necessary to tackle, prevent and disrupt modern slavery. Earlier this year, former ETI Executive Director, Peter McAllister gave evidence to the Committee. In his testimony, Peter joins other expert witnesses calling for a range of improvements needed to keep step with global developments on #BizHumanRights legislation, if the #UK is to return as a world leader in tackling modern slavery.
