Globally, more than 2 billion hectares of land are degraded – an area nearly the size of India and the Russian Federation combined. Every year, an estimated 12 million hectares of land are lost to degradation, impacting food and water supplies across the globe. World Environment Day is celebrated annually on the 5th of June and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. The theme for 2024, "Our Land, Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration," emphasises the importance of restoring land, combating desertification, and enhancing resilience to drought. Land degradation causes numerous environmental and social problems, impacting nearly 40% of our population. However, restoration can combat many of these problems while also helping climate change adaptation and mitigation. Part social network, part marketplace, the global restoration platform Restor, founded by Thomas W. Crowther, is a solution to these woes.
