"Communicating to Engage: the Role of Civic Monitoring in Shaping European Identity". This is the title of my latest contribution which is out today. My doctoral research on European public communication and citizen engagement within the European public sphere has led me to uncover significant practices being implemented at the local level. As in the case of civic monitoring of EU funded projects, these local initiatives play a crucial role in shaping European identity. NEW REPORT | The International Forum for Democratic Studies has released a new report by Vanja Calovic, “The Struggle Against Authoritarian Influence in the Western Balkans: Montenegro as a Test Case.” The report delves into the mechanisms of malign authoritarian influence, with a specific focus on Montenegro, and highlights civil society approaches to address foreign authoritarian influence over democratic institutions.      Montenegro, due to its small size, has become an ideal testing ground for authoritarian actors seeking to exert disproportionate influence on political outcomes with relatively modest investments. Separatist politics and how they are enacted will be the focus of a new research project at the School of Global Studies, to which the European Research Council has awarded a €2 million Consolidator Grant. The project will look at independence movements in Catalonia, Rojava (Syria) and Sri Lanka. “Specifically, we’ll study the strategies used by independence movements. The goal is to better understand the contradictory nature of separatist politics - it operates within the rules of democracy while also challenging and disrupting those very rules,” says Bart Klem, senior lecturer in Peace and Development Research and the project leader. Third day of the 12th edition of the Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy, at a panel discussing "The role of Romania in the EU after 9 June", a debate with citizens, a dialogue in which we can talk about the priorities of the future elected in the European Parliament, but also to discuss active citizenship and citizens' participation in the decision-making process. Background:"In recent years, the tide of misinformation and Euroscepticism has risen, leading to alarming levels of political extremism across Europe". This year’s edition of the Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy is focusing on the theme of trust in institutions, media, and among citizens.

The launch of the 1st Peoples’ Assembly for Europe in Athens by Democratic Odyssey is just around the corner! Kicking off on Friday, 27 September, and running through 29 September, the assembly will feature key events, including the Democracy Festival in Klafthmonos Square, Athens, on 28 September, which is open to the public. The Democratic Odyssey is a crowdsourced campaign pushing for a Permanent Peoples' Assembly for Europe. It brings together politicians, academics, civil society, and more, all working towards greater citizen participation in shaping Europe’s future.
