Here’s the thing: unlike traditional events like a potluck or a gallery night that require weeks (sometimes months) of effort to align schedules and build momentum, Christmas offers a unique opportunity. If someone doesn’t have plans, they don’t have plans. And if you offer a warm, inviting place to be, they’ll show up. And when your first event hits, it’s not just about that moment. It creates a ripple effect. Those people will remember the vibe, the camaraderie, and they’ll want to join your future events. Christmas isn’t just about gifts and traditions. It’s about creating experiences that leave people feeling seen and valued. And when you do that? You’re not just hosting a party; you’re building something meaningful that lasts far beyond the holidays. So, if you’ve got the time and the heart, think about hosting your own version of an Orphan Christmas. You never know the connections it could spark or the memories it’ll create. What are your plans for this holiday season? Should I wish people “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays”? 🎄🎉 This is a question that has come up recently in a number of conversations that I have had with leaders of global companies with multi-culturally teams. They usually bring this up as wishing their teams and colleagues “Happy Holidays” with the intention of being more inclusive seems to get a negative reaction both from those who celebrate and those who don’t that DEI has gone too far. Some are also upset that the “Christmas party” is now called the “End of year party”. For organisations headquartered in societies where Christmas is a national holiday, such emotions are even stronger. To the leaders I have had these conversations with, I have suggested that they have a dialogue with those who are upset by this, explaining to them that the company is international, and becoming increasingly culturally diverse meaning that not everyone celebrates Christmas. You could also engage in a conversation around what cultural norms dominate and share that there are so many festivals celebrated at this time of the year other than Christmas, emphasizing that the common celebration for everyone is the end of the year and that’s why you refer to the party and greetings that way. It is important to keep in mind that people hold cultural norms close to their heart so this shift may take time and require patience. I usually also ask leaders if they send their wishes to their colleagues and teams around the world for some of the other major festivals celebrated by large groups of their employees? If they do, then wishing “Merry Christmas” would be appropriate. What do you think? Would love to hear your thoughts. #MondayMotivation

The Holidays are upon us, and many workplaces are starting their Holiday Party Planning. They are decorating, planning Secret Santa or Yankee Swap events, thinking about festive foods and otherwise getting into the Holiday Spirit. But what about your Team Members who don't celebrate Christmas? People like me, who celebrate Hannukah? Or Eid? Or Kwanzaa? Or the many other Festivals which occur between American Thanksgiving and the middle of January? Or the Team Members who observe Christmas, but don't celebrate it in the same way? Are your Holiday Festivities inclusive of their way of Observance and/or Celebration? Or is your company leaning heavily into the Christian or Secular Christmas Celebrations? This is a great opportunity for everyone to learn about other Holidays, and their traditions. Inclusion is growth and making your Team stronger. Happy Holidays to those who celebrate, and respect to those who observe their Holidays.
