UNICEF USA / The Harris Poll on young American's perspectives 2024 Thank you all for joining us on Wednesday, August 14th for the launch of the UNICEF USA/Harris Poll on young American's perspectives. UNICEF USA partnered with the Harris Poll to learn from young people about their opinions and perceptions on issues, civic engagement, political involvement, what they want from their leaders, and how they want to contribute and engage in the democratic process. Over 3,000 young people ages 14-22 were surveyed in May of this year and there is cause for both concern and excitement by what we learned from them. BOTTOM LINE: THEY’RE DISHEARTENED BUT NOT DISENGAGED.   The results reveal a generation-sized opportunity to engage youth politically and we are encouraged by the youth leaders, like Sophia and Aryan, who shared ideas, hopes and aspirations for themselves and other young people.     We are thrilled that you joined us for this important conversation about the poll results, shared in the conversation about what they mean, and perspectives from young people about what's needed going forward. It’s #WorldChildrensDay ! We’re joining UNICEF and listening to the future. We share their belief that by listening to children we can fulfil their right to self-expression, understand their ideas for a better world and include their priorities in our actions today. One of the aims of World Children’s Day is to start a conversation with young people. Over the past six months, we have been working on a partnerships project in collaboration with scientists and artists that places children at the heart of the conversation about natural world and the nature crisis we are facing. By asking children their opinions on important science topics, we can empower them to raise their voices for a better world. 🌎 To celebrate, we spoke to three members of our Young Design Panel, Ryaan, Bella, and Pola to find out their thoughts and feelings about the importance of looking after our planet. #TheMorningInclusive: Celebrating UNICEF's Legacy and the Power of Belonging On this day in 1946, the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 57(I), establishing the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF). This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a global commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of children everywhere. UNICEF was born out of the ashes of World War II, a time when millions of children were left vulnerable and in desperate need of care and protection. The organization's mission was clear: to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in devastated countries. Over the decades, UNICEF's role has evolved, but its core mission remains the same—to advocate for the rights of every child, regardless of their circumstances. Creating a culture of belonging is at the heart of UNICEF's work. Belonging means ensuring that every child feels valued, supported, and included. It means recognizing the unique challenges children face in different parts of the world and addressing those challenges with empathy and action. When children feel they belong, they are more likely to thrive, learn, and grow into healthy, productive adults. In today's world, where many children still face adversity, the need for a culture of belonging is more critical than ever. Whether it's through providing access to education, healthcare, or safe spaces, UNICEF continues to lead the way in creating environments where children can flourish. As we reflect on UNICEF's founding and ongoing mission, let's remember that we all have a role in fostering a culture of belonging. 🎯 Just Released: UNICEF Sierra Leone Country Programme Evaluation (2020-2024) We're excited to share the results of our comprehensive evaluation of UNICEF's work in Sierra Leone. Despite multiple challenges, including COVID-19, the programme has achieved remarkable progress in improving children's lives across the country. Key highlights: 🌟 Despite multiple emergencies, most outcome targets were achieved in health, nutrition, WASH, education, child protection & social protection. 🤝 Strong alignment with the government's development plan & recognized leadership in joint UN programming. 💡 Integrated approaches in early childhood development, adolescent programming & evidence generation yielded tangible results. ⚖️ Gender, equity & human rights were mainstreamed, with a focus on empowering girls and women while addressing structural barriers. The evaluation highlights UNICEF's strong partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone and its leadership in coordinating with other UN agencies and partners. This collaborative approach has been crucial in achieving sustainable results for children. What if there were proven solutions that could transform the lives of children around the world? ...    Guess what? There are!   So what should we be doing with that information?    UNICEF, the European Union, and the African Union are proudly convening a high-level policy dialogue (today!) to discuss these solutions with governments, civil society, and private sector stakeholders - and of course youth and child advocates.   The discussion will focus on PROVEN solutions for supporting:   🌟 immunization, to protect the lives and enhance the resilience of societies; 🌟 secondary education completion, to boost life-long economic prospects and agency, especially for adolescent girls; 🌟 child benefits, to reduce poverty and yield broader social and economic impacts; and  🌟 early years investments to enhance human capital development. We all have a role to play.    What's yours? A new Harris Poll survey of youth sponsored by UNICEF USA’s Community Alliance for Child Rights reveals a generation-sized opportunity to engage youth politically. New York City, NY—Gen Z has been shaped by significant world events. The global pandemic, paired with school closures, economic disruptions, and political unrest, created core experiences and perspectives that are influencing their present and future outlook. Gen Z (born between 1997-2012) is one of the largest and most diverse generations – making up 1 in 5 people in the U.S. Whether our communities are ready or not, GenZ is shaping the culture, economy, and political environment of the U.S. Investing in our shared future means engaging this generation. Our event at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, "Advocacy to Achieve the SDGs for Children", co-hosted with UNICEF, brought together global experts to discuss how country-level advocacy can turn global commitments into meaningful action for children. Here are a few highlights: Our Executive Vice President, Lucy Martinez Sullivan, opened with a powerful message: to deliver on the Sustainable Development Agenda, we must translate global goals into effective local action. Advocacy is key, and success depends on reliable country-level data systems that ensure every child is counted.  Unicef's CRVS and Legal Identity Specialist Bhaskar Mishra, highlighted the staggering data gap: 1 in 4 children under five births and more than half of under-five deaths are not recorded. Filling these gaps is crucial for addressing preventable child deaths.  Bloomberg Philanthropies's Betsy Fuller, MPA emphasized that data is fundamental to understanding the gaps we must overcome to achieve the SDGs for children. Building sustainable data systems is essential to create policies that protect children.  Our panelists shared valuable insights on scalable and replicable advocacy models across countries. Dr. Juan Pablo Bocarejo emphasized that advocates play a crucial role not only in pushing for legal reforms but also in reshaping the underlying infrastructure to enable policy change. Robert Eckford, Program Director of our Data for Health Initiative, echoed this by emphasizing that advocacy involves empowering grassroots organizations and amplifying public voices to influence change at the highest political levels. Dr. Nguyen Thi An of Healthbridge Viet Nam tied it all together, reminding us that advocacy, whether at the local or national level, is cyclical and interconnected.
