The bad news: The summer in the northern hemisphere was the hottest since records began, breaking global heat records for the second year in a row and "putting 2024 firmly on track to be the hottest year in recorded history". The good news: We know the reasons, we know the solutions, and each day, more people are joining mission zero-emission and operation restoration. At EKOenergy, we are proud of making a small but meaningful contribution in many ways. Here is some news from the last week. - Once again, we contacted energy sellers and energy consumers in many countries, encouraging them to join us in our efforts to speed up the energy transition. - We received news from a river restoration project we funded in northern Sweden. - We welcomed a new consumer in Ecuador and we audited EKOenergy-labelled volumes for several long-term EKOenergy users in Europe - We published three new Climate Stories leaflets, summarising some of the results of previously funded solar projects in Liberia, Syria, and India. - We interviewed the winners of this year's EKOenergy awards. The announcements will follow in the coming weeks. - We received news from an ongoing solar project in Malawi. Earlier this year, we granted €57,884 to the NGO Renew'N'Able Malawi to install solar-powered water pumping and a water distribution system in Bvumbwe. - We began the preparation of our next renewable energy campaign. - We welcomed a representative from the NGO RepowerUkraine to our office. He told us more about their work and gave us an update about a solar installation they are building in Kharkiv with EKOenergy's financial support. - We sent comments to SBTi, regarding their discussion text on Scope 3 emissions. - We checked more wind and solar installations for our EKOenergy-authorised sellers. - Some of us were at the weekly Fridays For Future protest again. It was a busy day at the parliament, and several members of the parliament dropped by for a short conversation. - We are recruiting a new colleague to help us maintain good contacts with our network of authorised sellers. - And more! Thanks a lot to all those who contributed in one way or another.

Solar dreams, power nightmares—what went wrong with Pakistan’s clean energy transition? Pakistan’s electricity crisis tells a story of ambition, missteps, and lessons for every country transitioning to clean energy. Over the past decade, Pakistan rapidly expanded its power capacity, including renewable sources like solar. But the lack of investment in its aging grid left the system unable to distribute power efficiently. Instead of solving electricity woes, it created expensive idle capacity. Add to this unsustainable energy agreements, mounting debts to Chinese lenders, and operational inefficiencies, and the country is now facing rolling blackouts and economic strain. This underscores a crucial lesson: clean energy investments must be paired with robust grid upgrades, sustainable financing, and long-term planning. As global energy transitions accelerate, Pakistan’s experience serves as both a cautionary tale and a reminder—building a greener future is not just about generating power; it’s about ensuring we can deliver it. What do you think are the biggest challenges for countries in their clean energy transitions? "History has shown that cheap energy creates its own demand. When steam engines got more efficient in 19th century Britain, coal consumption grew. When oil got cheap and plentiful after World War II, humans didn’t enjoy the savings. They built more cars. More recently, in 2000, when estimating an industrializing China’s electricity demand for 2005, the Energy Information Administration’s projections were off by 25 percent. Modelers try to project how much energy will be demanded years into the future. But those projects often fail to distinguish between how much energy is needed and how much is wanted. In part, this is about the particular outperformance of solar, whose growth the International Energy Agency (IEA), an intergovernmental organization that oversees the global energy sector, has drastically underestimated every year since 2006 — as have countries’ own renewable energy targets."

Solar panel producers in China will likely make fully a quarter more #solar panel modules this year than they did last year, despite slowing demand, according to recent Wood Mackenzie data. Some of China’s excess production could be absorbed by the country itself, which keeps surpassing its own solar installation targets, writes Bill Spindle. Meanwhile, wealthy countries will have to decide to what extent they'll use inexpensive Chinese panels to help achieve their climate goals. https://nt-z.ro/3UYGbfw

Solar electricity is the lowest capex/kWh way to generate electricity during daylight hours. Excess electricity can be stored as H2 via electrolysis for night fuel cell use. The Australian government could in the short term procure 10% of China’s oversupply as a goodwill gesture to its No.1 trading partner, its energy thirsty population, and offset costs with accelerated federally legislated closures of States coal powered & fossil fueled plants. Country wide heavily subsidised solar panels would be distributed to States/Territories. Decisive leadership is needed to promote the greater environmental good for country + planet. https://lnkd.in/g5zVDPsQ #Economist
