IHA URGES UK TO BOOST HYDROPOWER FOR ENERGY SECURITY Former Australian Prime Minister and current President of the International Hydropower Association (IHA), Malcolm Turnbull, has penned an open letter to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, advocating for a significant expansion of the UK's hydropower capabilities. Turnbull emphasizes the crucial role of hydropower - in particular pumped storage hydropower - can play in enhancing energy security and ensuring a reliable and affordable decarbonized electricity grid. The letter highlights the urgency of implementing a cap and floor mechanism for long-duration electricity storage, crucial for rapidly developing new pumped storage capacity. Turnbull notes that the UK has 7 GW of shovel-ready pumped storage projects with over 135 GWH capacity, which could increase the nation's energy storage fivefold. New case study: Hamilton WwTW - The installation of the UK’s first containerised, mid-process hydroelectric turbine at a wastewater treatment works In line with the Scottish Government’s move towards a Low Carbon Economy, Scottish Water has committed to achieving its strategic ambition of ‘Beyond Net Zero’ by 2040. Driven by this ambition, the public utility tasked its commercial subsidiary, Scottish Water Horizons, to review its asset base to identify and accelerate opportunities for renewable energy generation. At Hamilton WwTW, the new aeration lanes were built above-ground and sit proud of the rest of the works, and it was determined that capturing the flow between the new aeration tanks and the final settlement would provide 10m of head which is further extended to 11.5m by use of a draft tube, and an average annual flow of 432 l/s. This provided the opportunity to develop a 48 kW hydropower scheme. Hydro Québec has begun early-stage talks with a number of financiers and other potential partners as it plans how to carry out a $185-billion strategy for new energy infrastructure that aims to wean Quebec off fossil fuels . The utility, Canada’s biggest producer of hydroelectricity, will spend as much as $110-billion from now until 2035 on new clean-power generation facilities and another $50-billion to improve the reliability of its electrical grid under a plan unveiled last November. Additional operating expenses will make up the balance of the estimated spending. Long-duration energy storage is the key to a sustainable energy future. Without it we are hamstrung by the ebb and flow of the sun and the wind. The UK's topography presents a unique opportunity to exploit the benefits of pumped storage hydropower. If constraints around planning, nimbyism and environmental factors can be navigated, this project would be the first pumped storage hydropower facility to be built in more than 40 years. New research from Idaho National Laboratory explores the advantages of these "hydro-hybrids," combining hydropower with large batteries to provide stored energy during peak demand times. With the ability to improve grid stability, reduce maintenance costs, and even restart power after blackouts, these hybrid systems could be a key piece of our renewable energy future.
