Doing something about it (e.g., putting money and resources towards it) is much harder, especially when the ROI isn't often clear for some time. When surveyed, restaurants surviving past 5 years with year-over-year growth have associated their success with: ✅ strong leadership ✅ strong culture ✅ strong training ✅ strong systems In other words… Properly taking care of their people and managing day-to-day operations with care. The reason restaurants normally suffer: Opening a restaurant is a chaotic and stressful time… And with that, training and systems fall by the wayside. “We’ll get it done after we open” Once opened, things get even more chaotic, and training, systems, and leadership development get to put on the back burner once again. Before you know it, the restaurant’s just running without these… AND, without proper training and systems, strong leadership turns into micromanaging and babysitting… Which takes away from development, growth, and support that makes leadership POWERFUL. Eventually, this misuse of leadership will lead to poor culture development and high turnover rates in both salaried and hourly employees. This will leave the restaurant owner constantly having to be in the restaurant, in order to keep the wheels on the wagon. So if you could ask a restaurant owner whose restaurant is struggling mightily in year 5, what they would do differently in year 1 or year 2… What do you think they would say?
