Have you ever wondered how something as simple as eating together can strengthen family bonds? 🍽️ Family meals are more than just a time to eat—they're opportunities to connect, communicate, and build lasting memories. Here’s why shared mealtimes are essential for family bonding: 1. Fostering Communication: Regular family meals create a natural space for open conversations. Children feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts, feelings, and experiences when they have a consistent time to talk with their parents. This open dialogue strengthens family ties and keeps everyone connected. 🗣️💬 2. Promoting Healthy Eating Habits: When families eat together, parents can model healthy eating habits, introduce a variety of foods, and encourage balanced diets. Kids who participate in family meals are more likely to develop a positive relationship with food and make healthier choices. 🥗🍎 3. Building Stronger Relationships: Sharing a meal provides a sense of security and belonging for children. The ritual of eating together reinforces family bonds, creating a foundation of love, trust, and support. These moments help children feel valued and cherished. ❤️👨👩👧👦 Looking to gain more insights into strengthening family connections? Improving Academic Performance: Studies have shown that children who regularly participate in family meals tend to perform better academically. The discussions around the dinner table enhance vocabulary, listening skills, and general knowledge, contributing to better school performance. 🎓📚 5. Instilling Family Values: Mealtimes are perfect for imparting family values, traditions, and cultural heritage. Whether it’s discussing the importance of gratitude, kindness, or sharing stories from your own childhood, these moments help instill core principles that shape your child’s character. 🌟📖 6. Reducing Stress and Promoting Emotional Well-being: Family meals provide a stable routine that can reduce stress and anxiety. The predictable structure of shared mealtimes offers children a sense of normalcy and helps them unwind from the day’s pressures. 😌🍽️ Incorporating regular family meals into your routine can lead to stronger family bonds, healthier habits, and a more connected household. Put your hand up if you know a picky eater 🙋♀️ Is that person between 5 to16 years old? Do they have a lifelong disability? And do they eat fewer than 30 foods, exclude whole food groups, or are they unable to participate in family mealtimes? If you know someone who fits this description, Rene Fraser really needs your help. Rene is moving onto the next phase of her PhD research where she is exploring the experiences of children and young people who are restricted eaters. This crucial phase involves hearing from the young people themselves. It will involve the young person taking some photos or videos of their mealtimes and participating in a Zoom session with Rene to share their stories. Rene has a lot more information to share and is happy to answer any questions – contact Rene directly, send me a DM, or check out the details in the comments for more information. #OccupationalTherapy #EvidenceBasedPractice #YourOTTutor

It is the 4th day of 2025 and festivities are coming to an end!!! As a passionate advocate for Public Health which Children form a large percentage of and with the festive season coming to an end and schools resuming soon (at least at my end here) , I have some timely advice for parents and teachers: 💜 TO THE PARENTS: Did you know that a healthy lunchbox can boost a child's cognitive function, energy levels, and even their mood? Pack nutrient-dense foods like whole grains, fruits, and lean proteins to fuel young minds! 💜 TO THE PARENTS AND TEACHERS: Staying hydrated is very crucial for all individuals and children are not left out. Especially in their academic settings where they play and learn. Dehydration can impair focus, memory, and productivity. Encourage kids to drink water regularly throughout the day! 💜 TO THE PARENTS AND TEACHERS: let's not forget the importance of hand hygiene! Teaching children proper hand washing techniques can prevent the spread of illnesses and infections. Make hand washing a fun and interactive experience with songs, videos, or games! By prioritizing these simple yet impactful habits, we can empower children to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Let's work together to create a healthier, happier, and more productive learning environment for all! #PublicHealth #BackToSchool #ChildrensHealth #HealthyHabits #Wellness #Education #HealthAdvocacy

🌈Ever wonder why kids light up around vibrant fruits and veggies? 🌈 Today, I had the joy of sharing my “Eat the Rainbow” workshop with some incredible young minds, like this curious little one! Huge thanks to Rosewood Library and @ipswichcitycouncil for giving us the space to celebrate nature’s colourful bounty. Watching kids discover the magic in every bite and seeing their faces light up as they learn that food from the earth fuels their bodies is beyond rewarding. Each workshop is a gift, and every “aha” moment they have reminds me why I love what I do. It’s a privilege to connect kids with nature, to show them that our bodies are meant to thrive on the rainbow Mother Nature provides. ✨ Follow your heart, find what makes you shine, and share it with the world! Someone out there needs your light. ✨ Also a big shoutout to Jayme Harrison from Teacup Coach for helping out. You’re amazing and a perfect addition to my workshop. It’s so much more than simply what we eat. #TeachersOfLinkedIn #EducationMatters #TeachingCommunity #Educators #EarlyChildhoodEducation #LearningAndDevelopment #SchoolCommunity #TeacherTraining #KidsEducation #NutritionEducation #HealthyKids #HealthAndWellness #EatTheRainbow #NutritionMatters #WellnessForKids #HealthierFuture #HolisticHealth #FoodIsMedicine #GutHealth #MentalHealthMatters #HealthyLiving #MindfulEating #IpswichCity #BrisbaneCommunity #LocalGovernment #CommunityEngagement #CommunityHealth #BrisbaneEvents #IpswichEvents #CommunityImpact #SupportLocal #QueenslandCommunity #ParentingTips #FamilyWellness #KidsActivities #ChildhoodDevelopment #ParentEducation #FollowYourPassion #MakeADifference #PurposeDriven #InspireChange #LeadWithPurpose #PositiveImpact

🌟 Is your child showing aversion to certain textures, colors, or consistencies? It could be a sign of picky eating, potentially impacting their overall physical and psychological well-being. 🍽️ But fret not! There's hope and help available to navigate through these challenges. 👩⚕️ Seeking guidance from a specialist can make a world of difference. They're equipped with tools and techniques like the SOS approach, sensory bins, and food chaining to address and reverse these issues effectively. 🔍 The SOS approach focuses on the sequential oral sensory method, aiding children in exploring and gradually accepting new foods at their own pace. 🍎🥦 Meanwhile, sensory bins provide a fun and interactive way for kids to engage with different textures and colors, fostering familiarity and comfort. 🔄 Additionally, food chaining introduces slight variations of preferred foods, gradually expanding their palate while maintaining a sense of familiarity. It's all about making the journey towards diverse eating habits an enjoyable and rewarding experience for your little one. 🌈 🤝 Remember, you're not alone in this journey. With the right support and strategies, you can help your child overcome picky eating tendencies, paving the way for a healthier and happier future! 💪 #PickyEating #ChildHealth #ParentingTips #sensoryissues #autism #parenttraining #occupationaltherapy #feedingdifficulties #sosapproach According to the sequential oral sensory (SOS) approach, feeding consists of a chain of 6 significant steps. And our task is to move your child along this chain.

🎳 Dear parents of active kids, 🚴♀️ Here are a few things to remember when feeding your busy children: ✸ Active kids do need more energy, but remember that kids are generally great at responding to their hunger signals and self-regulating their intake based on their needs. This means that their eating patterns may vary depending on their activity levels. ✸ Parents, what we can do to support our active kids is to provide them with structured, yet flexible mealtimes so that they have the opportunities to gather sufficient energy and nutrients throughout the day. ✸ Structured means that parents lead meal times by offering or serving meals at regular intervals (about 2-4 hours apart) such as breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as opportunities for nourishing snacks in between. Flexibility acknowledges that there is no one way to do things, and you may need to make adjustments to suit your child, family and schedule. How do we know that our kids are getting enough when their eating is so variable? 🏏 We can watch for signs of adequate energy balance: steady growth, sustained energy levels and proper recovery.
