It’s worrying to read that efforts to clean up England’s rivers, lakes and seas have been described as poor. Watchdog The Office for Environmental Protection (OEP), a statutory body, said that the government is going to miss its target to improve water quality because its plans need more funding, commitment and detail. Only 16% of our waterways are rated as having Good Ecological Status, but the government’s target is to have this increase to 77% by 2027. The OEP report says this isn’t going to be achieved and 21% is more likely. At Suprafilt Ltd, we’re proud to supply and install aeration systems that contribute to cleaning up the wastewater discharged into rivers, lakes and the sea. Through our commitment to continuous innovation into our technology, we strike to make a positive impact on the environment through carbon reduction and energy-saving methods. I hope greater efforts will go into improving water health – hopefully this report should serve as a wake-up call for those in power.

New analysis of the raw data underlying the 2022 Clean Watershed Needs Survey, published by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has revealed the American wastewater agencies with the largest future investment plans related to #stormwater management, #wastewater collection, and #watertreatment. Since the surveys last assessment in 2012, the reported spending requirements have snowballed significantly from $336 billion to $630.1 billion. But what are these rising costs? EPA awards $14.4 million to improve local water quality, address runoff pollution across the Mid-Atlantic ”The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $14.4 million to improve the health of local waterbodies in Delaware ($1.3M), the District of Columbia ($1M), Maryland ($2.3M), Pennsylvania ($4.8M), Virginia ($3.2M), and West Virginia ($1.9M). This annual allocation is part of the Clean Water Act’s Section 319 grant program and is intended to curb nonpoint source pollution (NPS) which occurs when runoff from rain or snow carries pollutants into waterways such as rivers, wetlands, and groundwater. Because NPS does not come from a single source, pipe, or facility, it is typically more difficult to address. Under Section 319, states, territories and tribes receive grant money from EPA that supports a wide variety of activities such as technical and financial assistance, education, training, demonstration projects and monitoring to assess the success of specific nonpoint source implementation projects.” Click Here to Read More: https://lnkd.in/g8NNsEev

Wet weather discharges present challenges for water utilities. Although many different approaches have been tried, studies show that concerns about regulatory programs for wet weather discharges remain unaddressed. At California Stormwater Quality Association Annual Conference 2024, Exponent’s Susan Paulsen, Ph.D., P.E., will present “Water Quality Compliance During Wet Weather: Lessons and Recommendations.” The session will explore the results of studies, as well as recommendations that US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and states invest in and develop guidance for Clean Water Act programs, including evaluating water quality standards; applying financial capability assessments (FCAs) and compliance schedules to prioritize permit implementation over time; and enabling the use of sustainable, nature-based solutions. Ending the week on a high! This morning, our Chief Executive Allan Prangnell Prangnell delivered a dynamic keynote presentation on our efforts to prepare New Zealand's first ever wastewater environmental performance standards – a game changer for our country. Here are some key takeaways: 🔍 We are working with the sector and industry experts to design the standards, set to launch in 2025. Our goal is to ensure they are robust and appropriately calibrated to New Zealand’s unique needs. 📅 In March next year, we plan to publish cost estimates and begin consulting on draft standards. 💧 Priority areas covered will include: Discharge of treated wastewater to water - Beneficial reuse of biosolids to land - Discharge of treated wastewater to land. Did you know that 74% of the population is connected to a wastewater treatment plant that discharges to the ocean? We’ll all be hearing much more about wastewater standards in the months to come! A huge thank you to the Water New Zealand team for hosting another jam-packed and inspirational conference. #WaterNewZealand #WastewaterStandards #SafeWater

DYK it's US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s annual Fix A Leak Week? 💧 The average household's leaks can account for nearly 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year and 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day. Common types of leaks found in the home are worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets, and other leaking valves. Fixing easily corrected household water leaks can save homeowners about 10% on their water bills. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/g-CFR2k Since its 2006 launch, EPA’s #WaterSense Program has been vital to #water #efficiency efforts across the country, providing significant economic value to ratepayers and water utilities as well as important environmental benefits. WaterNow Alliance has been pleased to partner with WaterSense since 2014 as a Professional Certification Organization under the Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper program (#QWEL) that provides landscape professionals with education and training in water efficiency strategies. #fixaleakweek
