Wates Group is embarking on a significant transformation as the year comes to a close. After a remarkable 42-year tenure in construction, Paul Chandler (He/Him) is set to retire, leaving behind a legacy of substantial growth. Since his arrival from #Skanska in 2017, he successfully elevated the construction arm's turnover from £700m to £1.3bn, driving profitable expansion. Moreover, a notable shift in leadership will see #SteffBattle assuming the role of executive managing director, joining the executive committee. Additionally, Smartspace will integrate into the construction group, aiming to enhance client offerings and expand services. SES Engineering Services, under the leadership of Rob Clifford as executive managing director, has experienced remarkable growth. The turnover surged by 73% to £299m, nearly doubling pre-tax profits to £5.8m in 2023, showcasing impressive financial progress. AN INDUSTRY STUCK IN THE PAST In my home town of Dorking there is a statue of Thomas Cubitt, a master builder and founder of the eponymous firm that built most of Bloomsbury and Belgravia in the early 19th century. Cubitt was the first man to place all of the specialist building trades under his own control, effectively inventing the model of main contracting that continues in basically the same form to this day. In the week following the collapse of another tier one man contractor, it is sensible to ask whether this 200 year old model is fit for purpose. It is surely an indictment of our industry that a man born in the same year as the poet Lord Byron would recognise most of what he saw in the industry today. Yes there may be more heavy plant and machinery and a few ipads on site, but the basic structure of the industry and the contractual relationships between the parties is essentially the same. Surely the time has come for another Thomas Cubitt to fundamentally change the way we approach and deliver construction projects, not just in the technology we use, but in the business models and industry structure that underpin it. Indeed, one of the primary reasons why new technology has failed to improve productivity and results in the sector is because business models and industry structures have not adapted to make best use of them. No-one I speak to in the industry is happy with the status-quo - from the businesses struggling to survive on a balance of high risk and low margins to clients faced with huge overruns and quality issues. If any good can come from the failure of ISG, then let it be as a catalyst for change - it's time to get serious about transforming our industry. #rethinkingconstruction #construction #constructioninnovation #transformingconstruction

I see some fascinating implications from work in Franklinton and have some thoughts! 🍽️ Restaurant Expansion Opportunities: With the influx of new residents and businesses, there's potential for savvy restaurateurs to establish unique concepts in Franklinton. The Walnut Street small business corridor, in particular, could be prime real estate for new eateries. 🏘️ Workforce Housing Impact: The focus on workforce housing in projects like Westrich could help address one of our industry's biggest challenges - employee retention. More affordable housing near urban centers can make it easier for restaurant staff to live close to work. 🏛️ Historic Redevelopment Potential: The Spaghetti Warehouse site discussion reminds me of how successful some restaurants have been in repurposing historic buildings. There might be opportunities for creative operators to preserve Franklinton's character while opening exciting new venues. 🌈 Diversification of Clientele: As Franklinton attracts a mix of income levels, restaurants will need to cater to diverse tastes and price points. This could lead to interesting hybrid concepts that appeal to both long-time residents and newcomers. 🎉 Event and Catering Growth: New residential developments and business corridors often lead to increased demand for event spaces and catering services. Local restaurants should be ready to capitalize on this. 🍺 Brewery and Distillery Synergies: With established players like Land-Grant Brewing in the area, there's potential for more craft beverage producers to cluster in Franklinton, creating a destination for food and drink enthusiasts. 🎓 Training Partnerships: As new businesses move in, there may be opportunities for restaurants to partner with workforce development programs or local schools to create job training initiatives. From my perspective, Franklinton's development isn't just about real estate - it's about the evolution of Columbus's culinary scene and the creation of new opportunities for our industry. Restaurateurs who stay ahead of these trends could find themselves well-positioned in this rapidly changing neighborhood.
