The CPTED concept has been codified in other states and is a required “consult” in any pre-construction planning and design of municipal and commercial properties. A “Designing out Crime” codified program in our great state of Maine may introduce effective ways we can deter crime by changing the design of buildings and public spaces. In these challenging fiscal times, cities should look beyond traditional policing methods and examine alternative ways to expand on public safety. CPTED is the foundation.

CPTED stands for: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. It’s a crime prevention philosophy based on the theory that proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime, as well as an improvement in the quality of life. To combat this issue, Operation: Don’t Be A Dumper (DBAD) has officially launched – a multi-agency initiative involving government departments, the local council, and community organisations. 🔎 Key Elements of DBAD: Strategic measures: Cameras and signage are being deployed in high-dumping areas to deter offenders and gather evidence for compliance and enforcement.
