In backstroke, butterfly, freestyle, the arms are doing the bulk of the work. And it’s still really important in breaststroke. Swimmers have to use the hand and forearm to move as much water as possible. Swimmers have to hold these positions to move as much water as possible. Swimmers need to use the strongest muscles to power the pull. Unfortunately, these movements aren’t natural. Many swimmers struggle to understand the positions they need to get into. They can’t manipulate the elbow, wrist, and shoulder at the same time create the correct shapes. There are no other similar movements/positions in life, so they don’t have much of a frame of reference. Many swimmers struggle to understand what to do when they do get into position. The struggle to use the lats. They focus on moving the hands versus the arm. They let the elbow and the arm pit collapse. A simple solution I like to use is what I call wall pull. From in the pool, have swimmers the forearms and hands on the deck and press down hard. They can feel the positions. They can feel the contraction. They can’t mess it up. You can have them go with one arm facing the wall to make it a little more specific to freestyle. You can have them go with one arm facing with the wall to the side to make it a little more specific to backstroke and breaststroke. To increase the effectiveness, pair it with any activity designed to improve upper body propulsion. You can go drills, full stroke swimming, training aids, or resistance. You can use it prior to swim repetitions to groove the skills, or you can do it during recovery periods to get the skills back. These sets are some simple examples to get you started.  Whatever set you write, adding wall pull can help swimmers get a little more out of it by improving their ability to hold water. Here's what matters in sales - Finding the perfect snowboard, just for you In my last post https://lnkd.in/e2yr5Wpn, I talked about snowboarding. For fun, go online looking for a new snowboard (as I've done). You're entering into a world of confusion. Nearly all big purchases make you feel this way. The choices and information are overwhelming and I guarantee you've second-guessed a big purchase in your life, not because of cost, but because there were other great options. Back to snowboards, here's the basics: You've got different lengths, flexes (stiff to soft), and curves (the part that rides on the snow - from camber to rocker and combinations in-between). There's boards for different riding styles, including freestyle/park, freeride/powder, and all-mountain. There's boards for beginners, intermediate and expert riders. There's boards made with different materials, different weights, different shapes on the nose and tail, and of course...different price points! How do you navigate that? Any good salesman begins by asking what type of riding you typically do. "I don't know, I ride a few times a year," will be the response. Don't use this answer to go into all the confusing details of types of boards I just shared. Follow-up with another question, something like this: "Are you staying on mostly groomed trails?" Are you able to do most beginner runs without falling?" Based on the answers, you're narrowing down what they need. They have no idea, but you do. You're the subject expert afterall. All of the products and services we sell are confusing to many customers. They have basic knowledge, like knowing a snowboard is different than skis and some brands must be better because they advertise more, JK! i.e Burton, the leading snowboard brand. Just be careful not to overexplain and overtalk, it's annoying and confusing. It's like word vomit. Just narrow down options that are relevant to them based on the questions and answers. Now you've determined the guy's a beginner and a $175 board with a large, embarrassing sticker that says, "beginner" is just the right board for him. Swipe his credit card, done deal. Not so fast... What about the upsell? How do we do this in an honest fashion? My example with snowboards is a bit simplistic but none-the-less, here's what I do. If I felt it was right for him, again based on my questions, I'd encourage him to get the intermediate board for $225. Not only does it have a cool skull and crossbones logo, but in like 5 more days of riding, he'll want to scrap that beginner board. He may not be intermediate today but it gives him something to grow into. Better alignment means less resistance which means more speed. In freestyle, one of the biggest alignment challenges is the legs and the hips. Low legs and low hips mean more resistance. That means less speed. The body as a seesaw. Press one end and the other end goes up. Take the pressure off one end and the other end goes down. For that reason, swimmers can indirectly control hip position with head position. As the head moves up and down, the legs will move in the opposite direction. Where should swimmers keep their head? I don’t know. Swimmers have different centers of mass, centers of flotation, and buoyancy. SMALL differences in position can lead to BIG differences in alignment. Swimmers have to FEEL it to change and control it. One of my favorite strategies is elevator swim or elevator kick. Have them change their head position over the course of a repetition, moving from high to low or low to high. Let them feel and find what’s best. Let them understand the impact of head position on alignment. Give them options by making them explore. They can FIND their best position. They can learn to CONTROL their best position. They can learn to MANAGE their best position. To help accelerate their learning, add speed. Have them build, descend, or go fast, with and without fins. Have them keep changing directions. Go up, down, down/up, up/down, up/down/up, or down/up/down. You can also increase the challenge by dragging the legs down with a weight belt, a light parachute, DragSox, shoes. With these two sets, we can see a couple options to explore these ideas. In the first set, we’ll explore the skills and then have swimmers learn to use better alignment to improve their stroke count throughout the set. In the second set, we’ll help swimmers learn how to manage their position at very high speeds, both with the drill and while swimming. Over time, they’ll discover what works best for them. When it comes to S&C for cycling, many people fall into the trap of sports specific training whereby coaches programme or riders do exercises in a certain type of way because it mimics certain positions or things within cycling therefore it’s beneficial. _ The trouble with this approach is that it is going to limit your potential of actually developing the athletic qualities you need and are trying to chase that help support performance on the bike. _ Building and developing strength and power is general in nature and the exercises used, your ROM and the body positions you’re in or your stance width shouldn’t look like you’re riding a bike. _ Riding your bike is the sports specific training you need which can’t and shouldn’t be replicated elsewhere. However where specificity is important from an S&C perspective is after the intake process and movement competency assessment. _ This is where certain things will be identified for you to specifically work on or what exercises will be the most appropriate for you to do based on your training age, injury history and ability to execute movements safely and effectively. Or specificity will be applied to you depending on the time of year to help manage fatigue or to help work on certain athletic qualities. _ This means selecting and programming exercises that give you the best chance of helping you get stronger and being able to produce higher amounts of force at a faster rate. The Union Atlas Step On® Binding will be available in new colors in fall 2025, and an additional Union Step On® model is in development for 2026 to cover all men's and women's sizes.
