Nothing makes up for experience. But you have to start somewhere and fortunately at calving time in a seasonal system there are soooo many opportunities to learn and upskill. With so many cows calving in the same paddock it is very easy to miss calves cows. This can become a welfare issue if they still have a stuck calf inside them or it can become an economic issue if they are missed and aren’t milked and dry themselves off. Both these happen on farms due to numbers involved, time poor people and lack of understanding/ processes. Identifying cows that have calved is a process like everything else. I hope this Knowby helps with the process after years of experience including getting it wrong!
