Panel discussion on Maximizing Mitigation: Lowering climate-impact of agri-food systems was moderated by Krishnan G S The speakers in this panel were Ajai Rana, Kunal Prasad, and Shiva Mudgil Agriculture contributes to 14% of global carbon emissions. That’s why it is essential to find mitigation options for agriculture while maintaining the food security. This challenge has a third dimension in India because small-holding farmers can't afford to take a yield cut. Various organizations have created methods to mitigate the effects of agriculture on climate. For instance, Savanah seeds is promoting DSR cultivation in Agriculture, IFC is working towards adopting sustainable dairy practices and Bambrew is innovating to replace plastics in inputs / output packaging with bamboo based bio-plastics. CEEW is working towards multi-level interventions oriented towards change in behaviours of different stakeholders including, the farmers by altering farming practices, consumers changing consumptions habits, processors by decentralizing processing and supply chain by replacing plastics and fuel used. The panel discussion highlighted such innovations that mitigate the incumbent negative climate impacts of agri-food systems. I write in The Sunday Guardian on 14th July with Rameesh Kailasam on sustainable agriculture and climate resilience. The transformation of India’s rice sector presents a unique opportunity for the country to become a global leader in sustainable agriculture. By embracing innovative solutions and fostering collaboration across the value chain, India can create a model for other nations to follow. Effective interventions must be simple, easily adoptable by farmers, and should deliver benefits across the value chain. The article highlights innovative solutions like String Bio Private Limited's microbial bio-stimulant #CleanRise and its capability for supporting responsible rice production in the country. The National Endeavor for Enhancing Water Resource Management through Innovative Technology and Roadmap Alignment (#NEERMITRA) is a comprehensive initiative aimed at accelerating India's progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (#SDG6) targets on clean water and sanitation. The initiative focuses on identifying and prioritizing challenges related to water security in India and developing a technology roadmap to address these challenges. Thank you, Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Dr. Preeti Banzal, and Dr. M. Mohanty, FNAAS for inviting ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas to the roundtable discussion. The NEERMITRA roundtable on water security in agriculture was an important step towards identifying and prioritizing the most pressing challenges faced by the sector and guiding the development of a targeted science, technology and innovation (STI) roadmap. We look forward to follow-up steps to help develop a national roadmap and sharing our novel innovations from the world over to serve the dryland farmers of India.

Accelerating WRI India’s goals for building sustainable food and land use systems, we organized a plenary at #ConnectKaro2024 on 'Enabling Sustainable and Resilient Food and Land Use Systems in India.' The session saw expert speakers addressing key challenges faced in transitioning to sustainable food and land use systems in the country as well as financing opportunities and innovative models that can support this transition. India is home to 18% of the global population but occupies just 2.4% of the world’s land and has access to only 4% of its water resources (Singh et al. 2023), resulting in a complex challenge with competing land demands, aggravated even further with increasing climate stresses. This impacts livelihoods and incomes of over 700 million people across India who depend on forests, common lands, and agriculture for their sustenance, including forest-dependent communities and small and marginal farmers, who are one of the most vulnerable groups affected (MoeF 2015, MoAFW 2019). With a diverse panel of experts joining for this dialogue, the session provided critical insights on how to bolster an inclusive stakeholder collaboration to tackle the complex issues of production, distribution, and consumption across the food systems. Swipe for key highlights from the session! #SustainableAgriculture What it #means: Sustainable agriculture prioritizes meeting the food and fiber needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same. It focuses on environmentally sound practices that minimize negative impacts on the planet while ensuring economic viability for farmers. #Keyprinciples: *Reduced reliance on synthetic inputs: Minimizing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to protect soil health and reduce pollution. *Soil conservation practices: Techniques like crop rotation, cover cropping, and no-till farming to improve soil fertility and prevent erosion. *Biodiversity promotion: Encouraging the presence of diverse plant and animal life within agricultural systems to enhance ecosystem services. *Water resource management: Utilizing water efficiently through practices like drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting. *Fair and ethical labor practices: Ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for the rights of agricultural workers. #Benefits of sustainable agriculture: *Improved soil health: Leads to increased productivity and reduced reliance on external inputs. *Reduced environmental impact: Contributes to cleaner air, water, and biodiversity conservation. * Enhanced climate resilience: Builds adaptive capacity to the effects of climate change. * Improved farmer livelihoods: Promotes long-term economic sustainability for farmers. #Challenges in India: *Small landholdings: Many Indian farmers have small landholdings, making it difficult to adopt certain sustainable practices. *Limited access to resources: Access to knowledge, technology, and financial resources can hinder the adoption of sustainable techniques. *Market access and fair prices: Farmers often face challenges in accessing fair prices for their sustainably produced goods. Despite these challenges, India is making strides in promoting sustainable agriculture: *The National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA): Aims to promote the use of sustainable agricultural practices throughout the country. *Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs): Empowering farmers to collectively access resources, market their produce, and adopt sustainable practices. By supporting sustainable agriculture, we can ensure a future where food production meets the needs of all without compromising the well-being of our planet. #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSecurity #Environment #Sustainability #India #terminology #term15
