In the Zernike Institute Advent Calendar, we are presenting 24 short spotlights in December. In these specials, we highlight PhD students, postdocs, support staff, and technicians of our research groups and team - providing a glimpse into their typical day at work. In Episode 8 meet Xiaojing Liu, PhD student in the Surfaces and Thin Films Group. Her research aims to uncover the hidden nature of two-dimensional (2D) materials by investigating the behavior of electrons. For this, she uses angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), a powerful technique that allows them to directly probe the electronic properties of solids and surfaces. Today, I am recapitulating the past three years of my PhD journey—a period that has been nothing short of transformative, filled with both challenges and growth. While it often felt like a rollercoaster ride (a bit more than that 😃), this experience has been about more than just acquiring technical skills. It has taught me invaluable life lessons: believing in myself, navigating tough circumstances, avoiding conflicts, and prioritizing what truly matters to progress. Here are the key milestones I’ve achieved over the last three years of my PhD: 1️⃣ Chip Design [SiGe BiCMOS] –Gained invaluable experience through rigorous and technically challenging RFIC designs of High data rate Modulators, Frequency Multipliers (x2 and x3), and Amplifiers with multiple successful tape-outs [2022-24]. 2️⃣ Characterization of Glass Substrate for 3D Heterogeneously-Integrated Packaging –In collaboration with the General Electric Aerospace Research [2022-23]. 3️⃣ A unique experience of setting up a D-Band Measurement Lab –From defining equipment specifications to successfully measuring the chips and antennas [persistent efforts paid off as all measured chips performed well] [2023-24]. 4️⃣ Travel Grant –Selected for the MTTS/NSF Student Sponsorship Initiative to attend IEEE RWW24. 5️⃣ Research Conferences –Attended/Presented my research work at IEEE IMS, BCICTS, and WAMICON –a way to connect with great minds. 6️⃣ Completion of PhD Coursework –Fulfilled all academic requirements for my PhD program [2024]. 7️⃣ PhD Candidacy Achieved –Passed both the written and oral (proposal defense) qualifying exams to officially become a PhD candidate [2024]. 8️⃣ Co-op Opportunity at IMEC Florida –Secured a co-op opportunity to further enhance my skills in RFIC design and advance my career in research and development of Hetero-integrated systems for 6G [2024-25]. More to Come –The journey is ongoing, with more exciting developments ahead—stay tuned! I am truly grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey so far, in any capacity. #PhD #ECE #UniversityofFlorida #IMECFLORIDA

The JAE INTRO fellowships are open until May 20th. One of the offers we have is to work in the Nanomechanical characterization of sensor devices based on novel materials under the supervision of Marta Fernández Regúlez. Are you a Master student (course 2023/24 or 2024/25) or undergraduate in your final year? Do you want to start your career in research? Check the offer and the conditions: https://lnkd.in/d8DFqw5k The proposed project will be conducted within the framework of the "SENDESIS" project, "Sensor devices by sequential infiltration synthesis of metal oxides on block copolymer templates." The overarching aim of the SENDESIS project is to pioneer a novel class of advanced functional nanomaterials through the infiltration of thin films of nanostructured polymers with metal oxides. Infiltrated polymers, especially when combined with metal oxides through techniques like sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS), exhibit several unique properties that make them valuable for various applications. Some of these properties include enhanced mechanical strength, improved thermal stability and chemical resistance offering a versatile platform for tailoring the properties of composite materials to meet diverse application requirements across fields such as materials science, electronics, catalysis or sensor devices. The student will primarily undertake the mechanical characterization of the nanostructured polymers fabricated at the clean room of IMB-CNM. This will be carried out by combination of dedicated mechanical test platforms and atomic force microscopy (AFM), with a focus on advanced modes such as Quantitative Nano Mechanics (QNM) based on peak force tapping. Supplementary characterization of the nanostructures will be conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), focused ion beam scanning transmission electron microscopy (FIB-STEM), or energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The student's work will contribute to understanding the functional properties hybrid organic-inorganic nanomaterials in the form of nanostructured thin films, nanowires, or 3D stacked films for building up sensors of unprecedented performance. Additionally, the student will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with the clean room engineers for material optimization and device integration. #career #science #students #tfg #tfm #JAE_INTRO
