➖ KEY POINTS from 'Psychological First Aid' ➖ 🗝The session focused on building emotionally safe spaces in different contexts, where there is the possibility to face high levels of stress. 🗝Patti and Tembi explained how trauma affects the brain and the nervous system, and how it can impair learning, communication, and well-being. 🗝They introduced the concept of triggers, which are unconscious reactions to situations that activate earlier wounds or traumas, and how to manage them by breathing and self-regulating. 🗝We were introduced to the RAPID model, which is a step-by-step approach to provide psychosocial support to someone who is facing difficulties or challenges, by building rapport, assessing, prioritising, intervening, and directing to further care. 🗝Finally, the session provided us with interpersonal and organisational strategies for creating emotional safety, such as checking in and out, creating reflective spaces, celebrating each other, and creating consistency and routine. Vicarious trauma for anyone bearing witness to others' trauma is a huge issue in the public conversation right now. I've worked with counsellors, Police, customer service staff, pharmacists, lawyers and legal admin staff, psychologists, journalists, paramedics, nurses, teachers, bank staff, carers and more in training skills development to minimise the impacts of VT. This is a workplace health and safety issue that CAN be managed well with an early intervention approach. At MakeShift there are lots of enquiries coming in about workplace programs. I've been designing one off workshops as well as monthly facilitated check ins and group reflective sessions that focus on noticing the impacts of burnout and VT, and using Creative First Aid as a trauma informed, accessible response that people can be empowered to weave into their routine straight away. It's a little bit of psycho-education about the nervous system, plus an exploration of creative practices that start at one minute repair prescriptions that work to regulate and keep workers in their window of tolerance, so as to be able to effectively manage the content they are exposed to at work. We are passionate about this work. People doing jobs that support others in the midst of great challenge are literally holding our community together, and require care and support too. We like to do this in a way that meets the reality of our actual lives, connects with what you enjoy, and injects a dose of delight, awe and wonder into the day. Please get in touch if you'd like us to design a program, workshop or check-in series for your team. https://lnkd.in/ghS5kp2C #creativefirstaid #creativeprescribing #vicarioustrauma #workplacementalhealth #psychologicalsafety #socialprescribing #creativeprescribing

#talk Pharmacists are the first point of care! We completed a psychological first aid course offered by John Hopkins University which was developed to assist healthcare professionals in being there, both physically and emotionally, for patients in traumatic and life-changing events. With these tools as pharmacists, we can not only offer health care services to treat a physical ailment but also be an individual who listens and supports a patient through their treatment and recognises when we may need to refer them for further psychological assistance. Mental health is important, and with the move towards holistic healthcare, these skills are indeed necessary to equip us for our roles.
