It was an incredible experience attending the launch event at the House of Lords to mark the 10-year review of the Selecting for Excellence report. Originally released in 2014, this report was developed to address the significant inequalities in the recruitment and retention of students from widening participation backgrounds. Over the past decade, tremendous strides have been made toward creating a more diverse medical workforce. These efforts span impactful policy changes and the growth of outstanding third-sector organizations such as Melanin Medics, led by Olamide Oguntimehin, Medics&Me, led by Megan Pode, and The Aspiring Medic's Support (TAMS) C.I.C, alongside many other initiatives that are driving meaningful progress in widening participation. Importantly, the growing body of evidence underscores that a diverse workforce is not only a moral imperative but also crucial for delivering better patient care. The review highlights how far we’ve come while acknowledging the challenges that remain. I look forward to seeing how stakeholders will act on the new recommendations to further this vital mission. Hey LinkedIn, have I ever told you about my passion for quality assurance in the pharmaceutical world 🌍 ? As a pharmacist 👨🔬, quality is fundamental to ensuring patients receive safe and effective treatments. Quality assurance takes place throughout the entire lifecycle of a medicine, from its discovery in the laboratory 🔬 to its delivery in the pharmacy. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) describes this journey as a meticulously structured process. In the pharmaceutical industry, medicine production follows strict manufacturing practices known as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). These GMP are described by the World Health Organization (WHO) as being part of quality assurance, ensuring that products are consistently manufactured and controlled according to quality standards appropriate for their intended use. Every medicine is more than a product—it’s a promise of trust 🤝 . A promise that patients will receive reliable treatments 💊 . A promise that healthcare professionals will have all the necessary tools to make informed decisions. For my part, I am proud to work at a company like Novartis, which considers quality not just as a goal but as a core pillar of its values. I want to give a shout-out to my quality-colleagues at Novartis Belux— ✨ Suzy De Ceuninck, Caroline Vermeiren, Laurent Kollmann, Sylvie Cherpion, Sabine Dewit, and Eva Bastens ✨ —for ensuring that the products reach the Belgian market are of the highest possible quality.

Private hospitals (for profit and not for profit) are doing it particularly tough (despite the many positive long term trends), so strategy and particularly ability to execute become even more important. Part of the challenge is to be able to communicate it (strategy) in a simple fashion (improves the probability of it being understood, supported and therefore executed). I’ll be running a series sharing hospital group strategies and you can be the judge.

Last week I had the privilege of attending the Becker's Healthcare Chief Pharmacy Officer Summit in my old home town of Chicago. This was a valuable opportunity to engage with leaders and experts dedicated to advancing pharmacy practice. The event highlighted the intersection of innovation and care, with thoughtful discussions on integrating AI into pharmacy operations, supporting value-based care models, and ensuring patients receive timely, effective services. I had the opportunity to listen and learn from many exceptional speakers and panelists, individuals who led with knowledge, passion, and dedication to their craft and the patients they serve. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge several of the speakers who really made an impression on me last week - this list is far from exhaustive and highlights just a few of the many amazing leaders at this conference. Thank you to Ghalib Abbasi, PharmD, MS, MBA, Nilesh Desai, Dovena Lazaridis President Elect-AMCP FL, Kristen Kruszewski, Seth Hartman, PharmD, MBA, and many others, for your insights and leadership. It was also meaningful to hear from George W. Bush and Jenna Buth Hager, whose reflections on positivity and leadership brought a sense of calm and unity during a time when we need it most. As an industry consultant and a representative from SAS, this summit offered a chance to reflect on how our organization can align our capabilities to support the real-world needs of pharmacy leaders.
