Why is a pharmacy enterprise important? First of all, reference my post from yesterday if you want to start with what is a pharmacy enterprise. Second, a pharmacy enterprise is important for health systems to ensure consistency, efficiency, and financial performance across acute care, clinical, retail, and specialty services. Centralizing all pharmacy leadership under ONE leader drives alignment and decision-making. Centralized leadership promotes collaboration and BETTER 👏🏼 PATIENT 👏🏼 OUTCOMES 👏🏼 across the entire system.

I am beyond excited to join the Lumeris team as Executive VP and Chief Clinical Transformation Officer! So why Lumeris? I have spent my career in pursuit of better health for populations at a reduced overall cost – across an independent provider organization, a large, integrated health system, at a payor, and most recently at the nation’s largest retailer, Walmart. This country continues to suffer an epidemic of chronic disease, suboptimal health outcomes, inequities in care delivery and access, waste, and an unsustainably high cost of care. Providers are experiencing burnout and moral injury at an alarming pace. My assessment has been that the current misaligned incentives favor more care, expensive care, and, in many cases, fragmented and inefficient care. I have long believed that value-based care, a system where providers, purchasers, and patients share aligned incentives is our best way forward.  If I am right, why hasn’t it happened? After nearly 30 years in this space, I’d simply say it’s really hard! It is happening in pockets, to be sure. But we have yet to see value-based care widely embraced. It’s hard because it requires a new way of thinking. It requires accountability for cost and appropriateness, and different ways of contracting, and new accounting models, and different skill sets, and collaboration between payors and providers, and different technology…and leadership. For over a decade, Lumeris has been assisting health systems and large medical groups – where much of healthcare delivery exists today – learning this new way of delivering care and having it financed with proper incentives. The key pillars of success: enabling technologies, value-based care services, payer contracting, and thought leadership have been the hallmark of the Lumeris offering. Today, the entire healthcare ecosystem sits on the precipice of perhaps its most meaningful disruption in decades, brought about through the power of generative AI and the waves of exponential improvements that will follow. The potential for positive impacts on quality, costs, the professional satisfaction of physicians, patient engagement, chronic disease management, and education are endless. For patients managing multiple medications, deprescribing has proven to be a vital strategy in promoting patient safety and enhancing the quality of care. By carefully reviewing and reducing unnecessary medications, healthcare providers can reduce the risk of adverse drug interactions and improve overall health. Equally important is effective clinician onboarding. As healthcare organizations grow and evolve, ensuring that new clinicians feel supported and well-trained is critical to maintaining quality care and operational success. A strong onboarding process helps clinicians quickly adapt to new systems, collaborate with their teams, and deliver excellent care from day one.
