Today is the International Day for Biological Diversity, also known as Biodiversity Day. Biodiversity is an integral part of NCC’s sustainable development framework, which serves as the foundation for our sustainability efforts. Across all the countries in which we operate, we strive to reduce negative impacts and enhance positive effects on biodiversity. For instance, when constructing according to BREEAM environmental certification or EU taxonomy, criteria related to land use and ecology are always part of the project to safeguard biodiversity. BREEAM’s criteria assess solutions such as site selection, protection, and enhancement of ecological features, ultimately contributing to the ecological value of the building. Long-term impacts on biodiversity and a building’s carbon footprint are also considered within the criteria. Using fewer materials supports the preservation of biodiversity. We are on the right track by constructing durable solutions, renovating old buildings, and using resources responsibly. Promoting biodiversity is best achieved by tailoring actions to the unique conditions of each project or area, combining multiple measures. Read more about NCC's sustainability work below:

Sustainability is one word, but takes many many different forms and considerations. It’s complex. Jargon, acronyms, bureaucracy and policies feel that they exist just for the sake of it - rather than helping businesses actually achieve a meaningful #sustainability outcome. Simplified frameworks, practical approaches and well designed solutions would, in my view, really help more businesses achieve more (alot more). The solution side and practical approaches are easy, but it’s unlikely that we’ll see frameworks and policies get any easier to understand for the forseeable future. My suggestion: Demand more of your consultants. If you feel more confused after chatting to them, then they probably don’t understand it either.
Only a few years ago, most companies could fit everything they needed to know about sustainability into one person’s head, now it requires a team of experts who feel overwhelmed with the enormity of implementation. This is reflected in feedback from our latest members’ survey, and our message is clear – we hear you and we’re here to help. Satisfaction around Green Star remains high and you also told us that you are happy with our work around sustainable finance, responsible products and biodiversity, and for creating new links across the construction value chain. Transitions are difficult, transformation is hard. Our role is to help you deliver buildings fit for the future. FROM UNSUSTAINABLE TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. Sustainable development has been defined as “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (The World Commission on Environment and Development, Brundtland Commission 1987). In other words, when people make decisions about how to use the Earth’s resources such as forests, water, minerals, wildlife, etc. they must take into account not only how much of these resources they are using, what processes they used to get these resources, and who has access to these resources. Are enough resources going to be left for our future generations to use and will the environment be left as we know it? Today, therefore, development plans have to ensure: sustainable and equitable use of resources for meeting the needs of the present and future generations without causing damage to the environment. The primary objective of sustainable development is to reduce the absolute poverty of the world’s poor by providing lasting and secure livelihoods that minimize resource depletion, environmental degradation, cultural disruption, and social instability. It also considers the equity between countries and continents races and closes, gender and ages. It includes social and economic development. It is a process that leads to a better quality of life while reducing environmental impact. To ensure sustainable development, any activity that is expected to bring about economic growth must also consider its environmental impacts for long-term growth and development. Long-term economic development is interlinked with environmental practices. Practicing sustainable development poses a challenge because people must learn to live on the world’s ecological interest and not on ecological capital. To accomplish sustainable development, the following number of areas have to be recognized. 1. Improving energy efficiency 2. Saving forests 3. Safeguarding biodiversity 4. Adopting water resources management 5. Managing coastal zones and ocean fisheries 6. Arresting pollution 7. Planning cities better 8. Accomplishing a second green revolution 9. Stabilizing world population 10. Stopping environmentally destructive subsidies
