Together, transforming the experience of aging.®
About us
As a system of not-for-profit communities, programs and services founded on Quaker values, Kendal aspires to transform the experience of aging, guided by Kendal’s Values and Practices (see www.kendal.org ). They help ensure that Kendal’s residents and staff share the spirit of community and collaboration and the respect for each individual that flow from Quaker principles. Kendal affiliates work together within the Kendal System and with caring people outside of it to transform our culture’s view of aging and of older persons, stressing the potential for fulfillment and continuing contribution during the later stages of life. The Kendal System uses a federal-type model that seeks to obtain the best of two worlds: sensitivity to local circumstances with most decision-making at a local level, and a capacity to gain benefits of being part of a larger system. Oversight of each Kendal organization is provided by a local board of directors. Residents and community members serve together on each of those boards and the President of each resident association attends those respective board meetings. Said another way, governance of each Kendal organization is not in some corporate office removed from the people being served. Residents are informed about financial and other matters in which they have important interest. Assets are kept within local Kendal organizations throughout the Kendal System and not put at risk to fund new developments in other places. That model has been built and refined over time, with the participation and care of the leadership of all of the organizations in the Kendal System. McKnight's Senior Living covered the scoop on Kendal at Oberlin's recent adoption of "Floor-ence" the robot. "The idea behind the community’s use of the technology is not only to supplement staffing at a time of shortages but also to reduce potential work-related injuries, according to the CCRC. 'The robot certainly won’t replace any jobs,' said Floor-ence’s “boss,” Environmental Operations Manager Crystal Hall. 'However, the housekeeping department does experience staffing shortages, making it difficult to keep up with the floor care needs spanning this large community. So the cleaning robot will be a big help.'"

The "Burke Bridge", both figurately and literally, is an exceptionally suited commemoration for this nature enthusiast, environmental advocate and friend to many. Ann E. Gillespie, CEO of Collington, A Kendal Affiliate, added, "The bridge we dedicate today symbolizes connection—between people, between ideas, and between our community and the natural world around us. It is a fitting tribute to Mike, who dedicated so much of his time and energy to fostering connections that would lead to a healthier, more sustainable environment." Academy has helped provide me with new perspectives that are hard to get through normal day-to-day operations. I hope my experiences, leadership tools, and newfound perspectives can inspire our Health Services department and continue to make Kendal at Ithaca an even better place to live and work. I am very grateful to be provided this experience!” Laurie Mante, CEO of Kendal at Ithaca, shares, “As we celebrate Mike’s accomplishment, we recognize the importance of strong leadership in our community. In this volume, resident writers from Kendal at Ithaca offer vivid glimpses into their past, illustrating how significant moments can inspire and enrich our daily lives. The book features thirty-two life stories that emerged from a writing course led by Professor Jane Juffer from the English Department of Cornell University. In the introduction to the collection, Professor Juffer instructed residents that, “this is not a chronological account of their life and that they should just sit down and write, focusing on sensory details such as smell, touch, sound and sights.” Resident Nancy Ramage shares, “Being in these memoir classes was a truly marvelous experience and opened up new avenues of writing for many of us. Jane, the teacher, created a wonderful atmosphere and encouraged us to be open with our stories from the past. In addition, the atmosphere of her classes was so mutually supportive that it brought out recollections that — in other circumstances — we might not have been willing to share. As far as I could see, everyone was interested in everyone else, and no one was ever made to feel left out or inferior for what we wrote or said."
